Target Audience: Pharmacists, Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practioners

Goal: This knowledge-based CPE activity will provide the healthcare professional with evidence-based updates on current and emerging infectious disease therapeutics to help ensure best practices, minimize preventable healthcare related cost, and provide optimal patient care. Focused topic discussions will include updates on laboratory testing interpretation, antibiotic associated adverse effects, sepsis, healthcare and ventilator-associated pneumonia, common pediatric infections, and candidiasis.

Pharmacist Course Objectives:

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify major changes in the 2016 HAP/VAP
  • Discuss empiric and definitive antimicrobial therapy for HAP/VAP
  • Identify appropriate treatment regimens for HAP/VAP through patient cases
  • Identify neurotoxic effects of antibiotics, proposed mechanisms for toxicity and clinical management strategies.
  • Describe the literature regarding acute kidney injury with combination vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam.
  • Discuss antibiotics-related cardiotoxicity and implications for clinical practice.
  • Compare definitions of sepsis with the SEPSIS-3 and Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines
  • Summarize key literature findings that promoted the updated sepsis and septic shock definitions
  • List controversies and limitations of the SEPSIS-3 guidelines
  • Identify appropriate therapies in the management of sepsis and septic shock
  • Discuss the microbiology, pathogenesis and risk factors of common pediatric infections, such as community-acquired pneumonia and urinary tract infections.
  • Identify the appropriate empiric antimicrobial therapy for common pediatric infections, such as community-acquired pneumonia and urinary tract infections.
  • Review the pathophysiology and risk factors for invasive candidiasis
  • Discuss empiric and definitive antifungal therapy for various types of candidiasis
  • Identify major changes in the 2016 revised IDSA guidelines for management of candidiasis
  • Identify appropriate treatment regimens for candidiasis through patient cases
  • Identify common rapid diagnostics used in healthcare
  • Review pathogens detected for common rapid diagnostics
