10.  AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

A.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Henry Vivar, 11th grade student, for being selected as the Senior High School Student of the Month for April 2011.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Henry Vivar for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

B.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Emma Blackwell, 12th grade student, for being selected as the Sr. High School Student of the Month for May 2011.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Emma Blackwell for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

C.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Anthony Orsini, 8th grade student, for being selected as the Junior High School Student of the Month for April 2011.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Anthony Orsini for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

D. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Anne Li, 8th grade student, for being selected as the Jr. High School Student of the Month for May 2011.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Anne Li for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

E. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Kelly Anderson, 7th grade student, for being selected April’s Seventh Grade Student of the Month for the Westwood Regional Middle School.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Kelly Anderson, for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

F. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Nicole Koc, 7th grade student, for being selected as May’s Seventh Grade Student of the Month for the Westwood Regional Middle School.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Nicole Koc, for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

G. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Cynthia Battaglia, 6th grade student, for being selected as April’s Sixth Grade Student of the Month for the Westwood Regional Middle School.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Cynthia Battaglia, for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.


H. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Ariana Ibelli, 6th grade student, for being selected as May’s Sixth Grade Student of the Month for the Westwood Regional Middle School.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Ariana Ibelli, for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

I.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS The Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Outstanding Leader of Character was awarded to Evan McLaughlin, a junior in the Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Evan McLaughlin for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

J.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Susan Gugger, 12th grade student, for having her wire sculpture, entitled “Trombone Player,” accepted to the Morris Museum’s prestigious annual student exhibition, “Fresh Perspectives.”

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Susan Gugger for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

K. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Jacob Levesque, 11th grade student, and Leah Pranschke, 11th grade student, for being selected as members of the 2011 All-State Mixed Chorus.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Jacob Levesque and Leah Pranschke for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the students with a suitable certificate of recognition.

L.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Nicole Kalish, 10th grade student, for being selected as a member of the 2011 All-State Women’s Chorus.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Nicole Kalish for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.


M. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Lea Orisni, 10th grade student, for being awarded two first place ribbons with the outstanding rating for her fashion designs at the North Jersey Student Craftsman’s Fair.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Lea Orsini for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

N. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS the Westwood Regional School District would like to recognize Ryan Ross, 11th grade student, for receiving the Eagle Scout Award.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby congratulates Ryan Ross for this accomplishment, directs the Secretary to include this Resolution in the official minutes of the Board of Education, and directs the Superintendent of Schools to present the student with a suitable certificate of recognition.

O.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the Board would like to take the time to honor and recognize the following employees for twenty-five years of service to the District:


Nancy Salvi, Susan Sheehy, and Anne Vivona

P. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the Board would like to take the time to honor and recognize the following staff members who have and will be retiring:

Dennis Covello, Patricia Eckel, Regina Egan, Karen Fitzgerald, Margarita Grande, James Harris, Judith Horowitz, Catherine MacRae, Patrick McGowan, Esther Schnaittacher, and Joyce Woods

11. PUBLIC FORUM (Pursuant to Board Policy 0167 – Public Participation in Board Meetings)

During this portion of the meeting, district residents are invited to address the Board of Education on any topics specifically addressed in this agenda or on any other questions, comments, or concerns that may be in respect to the operation of their schools. The Board requests that individuals sign the speakers’ list, giving name and address, and asks that all remarks be directed to the Board as a whole (not to individuals).

The Board wishes to remind all attendees at its meetings that while it subscribes without reservation to the principle of keeping the community completely informed, by policy it cannot allow public discussion of personnel matters. If a matter concerning a district staff member is of interest or concern to a resident, the matter should be referred to the responsible Building Principal, Superintendent of Schools, or the Board of Education, either by telephone or letter.

Each speaker’s statement will be limited to five (5) minutes in duration. The Public Forum will be limited to one (1) hour in duration.

12. SPECIAL PUBLIC REPORT: Positive Behavior Support in School (PBSIS) Initiative in the Westwood Regional Middle School — Mrs. Suzanne Ziegler


13. PERSONNEL/NEGOTIATIONS: TBD

A.  Report

B.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the resignation for the purpose of retirement be accepted for Joyce Woods, Grade 6, Middle School, effective July 1, 2011, and the following resolution be accepted:

WHEREAS Joyce Woods has tendered her resignation as a Teacher in the Westwood Regional School District to become effective June 30, 2011, after having completed twenty-one years of service, fifteen of which were spent in dedicated and faithful service to the Westwood Regional School District, and

WHEREAS during her many years in our school system, she has imparted her knowledge and understanding of the educational needs of the students of the Westwood Regional School District, and

WHEREAS she has influenced the lives of many boys and girls with her deep understanding and has earned their love and respect as well as that of their parents and her colleagues, and

WHEREAS she has given unselfishly of her time and effort in the interest and welfare of the children of our school district,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby recognizes Mrs. Woods’ contribution to the district and expresses its appreciation of her dedicated services and directs that this resolution be included in the minutes of this Board of Education and that a copy be presented to Mrs. Woods as a token of its esteem.

C. Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the resignation for the purpose of retirement be accepted for Esther Schnaittacher, Speech Therapist, Special Services, effective July 1, 2011, and the following resolution be accepted:


WHEREAS Esther Schnaittacher has tendered her resignation as a Speech Therapist in the Westwood Regional School District to become effective July 1, 2011, after having completed fifteen years and four months of service, all of which were spent in dedicated and faithful service to the Westwood Regional School District, and

WHEREAS during her many years in our school system she has imparted her knowledge and understanding of the educational needs of the students of the Westwood Regional School District, and

WHEREAS she has influenced the lives of many boys and girls with her deep understanding and has earned their love and respect as well as that of their parents and her colleagues, and

WHEREAS she has given unselfishly of her time and effort in the interest and welfare of the children of our school district,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Westwood Regional Board of Education hereby recognizes Mrs. Schnaittacher’s contribution to the district and expresses its appreciation of her dedicated services and directs that this resolution be included in the minutes of this Board of Education and that a copy be presented to Mrs. Schnaittacher as a token of its esteem.

D.  Motion: that upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, the resignation for the purpose of retirement be accepted for Catherine MacRae, Secretary, Middle School, effective July 1, 2011, and the following resolution be accepted:

WHEREAS, Catherine MacRae has tendered her resignation as a Secretary in the Westwood Regional School District to become effective July 1, 2011, after having completed twenty-seven years and ten months of service, all of which were spent in dedicated and faithful service to the Westwood Regional School District, and
