Please take time to enjoy the summer with your family and friends. Students have worked very hard this school year, I am very proud of all of their effort and accomplishments. Thanks to the teachers for their help and guidance for the students.
As this school year closes, I close my career as an educator in the public school system. I would like to thank all students, parents, staff and community members who have been a part of my years of service at Nodaway-Holt. You have all contributed to who I am today, I am grateful for all you have done for me and the Nodaway-Holt community. A simple thanks for your kind words, cards, gifts and surprises is not adequate – know that I treasure it all.

Kindergarten News
Over the last few weeks kindergarteners have been learning about Amazing Creatures such as insects, ocean life, and dinosaurs in reading. They have played many games to work on new sight words, has, look, with, my, me, where, little, said, was, and here. I think their favorite was musical plates played like musical chairs except with sight words hidden on the bottom of the plate.
In math, kindergarteners continued reviewing skills of counting, adding, subtracting, comparing, and building through math stations. They have shown great maturity during stations and working in groups.
The latest science activity was hatching eggs and getting to hold the baby chicks. Students learned about the life cycle of a chicken. And were so excited when they heard the chirping the first day the chicks hatched!
To end the year kindergarteners wrote about their favorite things in kindergarten and fingerpainted the background for their “Wave Good Bye to Kindergarten”bulletin board project. They had an amazing time and really showed off their writing skills by writing lots of sentences.
The Kindergarten Celebration was quite a success! It was nice to see so many families come to support their children’s education. Thank you for sharing your children with me this year! I have cherished each day with them and will miss them very much.
On a side note, as summer break has arrived it is important to make sure your child continues to be ready for first grade! Below is a list of things that will help:
-recognizing numbers between 0 and 30
-write numbers 0-29
-counting to 100
-talking about the calendar and the information it gives us
-Find 2 numbers that equal 10 (or 9, 8, 7, etc.)
READ! READ! READ!
Read to your child and let him/her read books so they don’t forget everything they’ve learned!
-Write in a journal/notebook and draw pictures to match
-TYING SHOES!!!
-taking turns in a conversation (without interrupting)

First Grade News
May has been a busy month for 1st grade! We went on a field trip to the Omaha Zoo, wrapped up our final math unit, and finished up our reading. This last week of school has been jammed packed with water fun, field day, inflatable slides and obstacle courses, as well as the excitement of finally getting to take the contents of our desk home! It's been an amazing year and we have made so many memories as a group together. This class will forever hold an extra special place in my heart as my first class and I will definitely be stopping by 2nd grade to say hello! Also, a big thank you to the parents--I couldn't have made it through without all of your wonderful support!

Second Grade News
May has flown by! We have been super busy wrapping up the 2017-2018 school year! It’s so crazy that summer is already here, and third grade is right around the corner! We did a lot of fun things that kept us really busy! We had our field trip to The Coterie Theatre and Kaleidoscope, the spring music concert, and several fun activities here at school. We also started a balloon countdown with ten days of school left. Each student got to pop a balloon and find out a fun surprise for that day! Some of the activities included lollipop day, extra recess, popsicle party, movie/popcorn, and a class cookout! They loved the balloon countdown! We finished the last reading and math units, and had a review of previously learned skills! It was a great time to review the past skills before they go on summer break! I hope you all have a wonderful summer break!!

Third Grade News
It’s hard to believe we are to the end of third grade! Our last weeks of school included two final projects in reading and social studies. Each student was assigned a novel to read which included Superfudge, Mr. Louie is Screwy, Wish, The Lemonade War, or Cam Jansen. After completing the novel, they decorated a Hy-Vee brown paper bag for our “Book in a Bag” project with all the elements of literature represented on the bag. They also brought in items from home that represented the book to put inside the bag. In social studies, we did a “Slice of My Life” project over Famous Missourians. Each student used different sources to research a person I felt fit with their personality/interests. Then they took the information they collected and wrote it on “pizza slices” inside a Pizza Ranch box. Their boxes also included pictures and timelines. To top off the project, they dressed up as their Famous Missourian.
The end of the year brought two much-deserved field trips for the kids. We watched the play “Jack and the Bean Magico” at the Coterie Theater in Kansas City and then had creative art time at Kaleidoscope. We also went to Safety Acres in St. Joseph to learn about farm and outdoor safety.
We wrapped up our final week with our big Dojo auction. Thank you to all who donated! We also finished reading the book Hoot and then watched the movie on the last day of school. Thank you for a great year and have a fabulous summer!

Fourth Grade News
We are busy wrapping up our school year in 4th grade. The 4th grade recently shared theirknowledge of Famous Americans with parents, friends, and peers in our Living Museum. All ofthe students did an excellent job with their presentations! Thanks to all those who visited themuseum!
I hope all students have a GREAT summer! Please don’t forget to read this summer, 20 minutes a day is better than zero! I hope to see many of the 4th graders at the Open Library throughout May and June! Also, there are great resources online to help keep your child’s math skills sharp such as Khan Academy (every 4th grader has an account), mutilation.com, and XtraMath. Also, each student was given a summer math packet to help keep the facts sharp!

Fifth Grade News
Farewell to all of my 5th grade families. As the year has come to an end, I write my final newsletter of the school year. The last couple of weeks have been filled with learning, celebration, and memory making. We completed a Teach the Teacher lesson, and the students did a wonderful job taking leadership and teaching the class. I learned a lot from each of them! We also were able to celebrate winning the fundraising for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with a 5th grade barbeque organized by Mrs. Madden. The kids and teachers loved spending the morning outside bonding as a class and playing games!
The end of the school year also means it is a great time to give special recognition to students with outstanding academic performance. I give an award to students that receive an A in all 4 quarters in Math, Language Arts, Science, and Spelling. I also give the Reading Circle Certificate and a Homework Whiz award for completing all homework, book quizzes, and book reports on time. Math award recipients: Paige Hanson. Language Arts award recipients: Paige Hanson, Preston Jenkins, and Trinity Olson. Science award recipients: Jackson Culp, Paige Hanson, Preston Jenkins, Dalton Maupin, Trinity Olson, Dillon Russell, and Courtney Woods. Spelling award recipients: Jackson Culp and Paige Hanson. I am so proud of all of the accomplishments each of the students has made. This class has shown so much growth, and I am happy that I was able to be a part of that. I am truly going to miss the students, staff, and families of Nodaway-Holt. I cannot thank everyone enough for giving me a wonderful place to begin my teaching career.

Sixth Grade News
They’ve done it; sixth grade is complete! We finished Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth. Wow, the end of that book makes the last few days of school hard! In math, we did some fun activities after finishing the curriculum then MAP testing. We tracked different stocks of companies measuring increases and decreases in stock value. We also did two different tessellation projects. First a simple shape, then one created by the student. We learned about ancient Indian cultures in social studies, and we finished our poem unit. We also had a lot of fun things happen at the end of the year. We went to see Avengers: Infinity War and had a fun day at Beal Park in Maryville, MO thanks to Sergeant Rick Smail our D.A.R.E. Officer. We also went to Remington Nature Center in St. Joseph, MO. While there we heard many tales of Lewis and Clark’s journey west. We also learned about snakes, some of us pet the snakes too! Finally, this year I am handing out a few classroom awards along with the regular school awards. The first being the Reading Circle Certificate, which honors those students who read sixteen books in reading counts this year. I will also present those who read twenty or more books with a pin for getting at least half-way through the 40 Book Challenge. Lastly, those students who worked hard to receive all A’s this year will be recognized.

FUN TIMES AT
NODAWAY-HOLT ELEMENTARY
In Second Grade this year, we worked on the five parts of a friendly letter. We wrote letters to Hershey’s, Pepsi, and Frito Lay! We heard back from all three companies, which was awesome! Frito Lay sent each student a personal, handwritten letter! They wrote in response to the letters that the student has written them, answering their questions and responding to their comments. They also sent a huge box of classic lays chips!
