2.  JOB PURPOSE

The Post Holder will provide Grounds Maintenance/Gardening Services to meet the needs of the Service.
To Maintain the Grounds, Roads and Paths within all Property’s of the Organisation in order that they are kept in a Safe and Presentable condition, and to contribute to the maintenance of the Building Fabric within the Organisation.

4.  SCOPE AND RANGE

To perform work including activities that may be demanding and/or non-routine.
Responsible for maintenance of grounds, roads and paths including landscaping improvements at:-

5.  MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Your performance must comply with the national Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare Support Workers Nov 2010 and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers
To work with Hazardous Equipment taking all Safety measures to prevent Danger, Avoid Injury, and Prevent Damage to Equipment
·  To participate in the operation of Gardening Planned Maintenance Schemes.
·  To undertake essential Grounds repair work and general maintenance activities under the instruction of the Grounds Supervisor to include:- Grass Cutting, Hedge Trimming, Shrub Pruning, Weeding and Spray Weed Killing, Litter Picking and Road Sweeping, Clearing Road Gullies, Planting Shrubs and Bedding Out Plants, Making Safe Small Trees and Clearing Leaves, Landscaping Improvements, Winter Snow and Ice clearing/Gritting of Roads and Footpaths, Transporting Materials/Green Wastes
·  To liase with the Grounds Supervisor regarding the Maintenance of Grounds, Roads and Paths, Equipment Failure and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
·  To carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance, Inspection, and Gardening in accordance with agreed procedures.
·  Participate in an Out-of-Hours on-call service for snow clearing and gritting on roads and footpaths during winter months 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
·  To complete all Report Sheets, and Log Books as necessary.
·  To follow and work from Landscape drawings and Manufacturers Specifications with reference to the Grounds Supervisor when necessary.
·  To use all relevant tools and equipment within safety guidelines as necessary for the completion of works.
·  To carry Communication Devices (Mobile Phones and/or Two way Radios) to facilitate immediate response to Emergences.
·  To undertake General Inspections and Minor Routine Maintenance of Gardening Machinery (Tractors, Lawnmowers, Strimmers).
·  Carry out Grounds Improvement/Alteration work.
·  To work with and assist other Estates staff in Excavation works, Laying/Lifting Paving Slabs, using Tractors and Trailers.
·  Follow polices’ procedures, statuary guidelines, and codes of practice as relevant and propose changes to working practices for own work area.

7.  KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

Recognized and registered apprenticeship in grounds maintenance.
Plus
National Certificate in Horticulture.
Or
SVQ ,2 in horticulture or agriculture./ L2 IVQ Tech Cert Motor Vehicle Systems
Or
City and Guilds Certificate in Grounds Maintenance.
Or
Equivalent Approved Qualification, or in special circumstances equivalent experience.
And
Experience and Training, which will be appropriate to satisfy the necessary academic standards, required.
To have a working knowledge of the following
·  Lifting and Handling Techniques, CPR Training, Asbestos Awareness, Confined Spaces, Fire Safety and Health & Safety at Work.
·  Safe use of Pesticide Spraying Equipment (after appropriate training).
·  Safe use of Tractors, Trailers, Hedge Cutter, Leaf Blower, Strimmers, Lawnmowers and ride-on mowers (after appropriate training).
The post holder will attend training establishments and on the job training sessions as necessary.


ESSENTIAL ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

8.  SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
Responsibility for Records Management.
All records created in the course of the business of NHS Tayside are corporate records and are public records under the terms of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937. This includes email messages and other electronic records. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep appropriate records of your work in NHS Tayside .and manage those records in keeping with the NHS Tayside Records Management Policy and with any guidance produced by NHS Tayside specific to your employment.

9.  PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB

·  The post holder is required to lift, pull and push a variety of pieces of equipment, which at times can be in excess of 15 kilos. for example tractor attachments’, waste bins, barrows, hand held machinery.
·  Periods of Intense Physical Effort: - Manual Digging/Excavation work, Tree/Hedge cutting, Loading trailers, lifting sacks/Paving Slabs.

10.  DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS

Apply skills judgement and experience to plan and organise own workload and prioritise solutions which will minimise grounds related hazards to patients, staff, visitors and themselves within the properties of the Organization.
Operate Unsupervised and use own Initiative to establish the condition of Grounds, Roads and Paths and to Determine Remedial Action required, reporting to Supervisor when necessary.

11.  MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB

Maintaining standards at all properties under remit especially during periods of adverse weather.
Ensuring the Grounds, Roads and Paths are kept in a safe condition, for Staff, Patients and Visitors, during winter weather conditions. Remaining up to date with the advances of technology in all aspects of ground maintenance, machinery and chemical solutions through training and development.

General Conditions of Service

POST REF NO: P/FM/43

JOB TITLE/GRADE: Gardener – Band 3

LOCATION: Ninewells / Kings Cross Hospital, Dundee

Conditions of Service

/ The terms and conditions of service for this post are those determined by the NHS Staff Council.
Remuneration / The current salary scale for the post is £17,760 to £20,727 per annum (pro rata for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on appointment is normally at the minimum but may be higher subject to verification of previous relevant service.
Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
Hours of Duty / The hours of the post are 37.5 per week.
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the service.
Superannuation / Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and 70 (65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay, which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime or travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.17 are as follows:

After 5 years aggregated service = 29 days (pro rata for part-time staff) or 5.8 weeks per year
After 10 years aggregated service = 33 days (pro rata for part-time staff) or 6.6 weeks per year
Public Holidays = 8 days (pro rata for part-time staff) or 1.6 weeks per year
