INVENTORIES AND PROJECTIONS MEETING AND WORKSHOP

13th-15th May 2013 ISTANBUL, TURKEY

1. Location of the Conference Centre

The TFEIP Workshop on 13 May 2013 and the Joint EIONET/TFEIP Meeting on 14-15 May 2013 will be held at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Suleyman Demirel Cultural Centre on the Maslak/Ayagaza campus. This is several kilometres North of Istanbul centre.

The Maslak/Ayazaga Campus

The above picture illustrates ITU campus and its surroundings.

The conference venue is highlighted as “SDKM” which stands for Suleyman Demirel Cultural Center.

You can also travel to/from the campus easily by using the metro (line M2, “ITU Ayazaga Campus” station). This takes you to Taksim Metro station, which is close to Istanbul city centre.

Travel and hotel options are included in the sections below.

2. Transportation Details for Istanbul

The figure below shows public transport links for Istanbul, including Atatürk Airport, ITU Ayazağa Campus, Taksim station, the City Center and the Metro Lines.

Travelling to the ITU Campus from Istanbul City Centre

You can reach the ITU Ayazağa Campus by taking the M2 metro line from Taksim. This is very quick (only ~15-20 mins), and the metros are frequent (links to timetables are included below).

However, please note that it can take quite a long time to get to Taksim Metro station from other parts of Istanbul. For example, if you are staying near the Blue Mosque, you would need to take the T1 tram line, then change to the funicular F1, to get to Taksim. Istanbul is a big and busy city, so road and tram travel can rather be slow!

Detailed public transport information can be found here: http://www.istanbul-ulasim.com.tr/en

Travelling from Istanbul Atatürk Airport

If you want to travel from the Ataturk airport to Taksim, then you can take a taxi (approx. 35-40 Turkish Lira, which is ~18-20 Euros).

You can also take the HAVATAŞ shuttle bus (10 TL, ~5 Euros). There are two shuttle buses every hour at :00 and :30. The journey takes ~40 minutes depending on traffic.

There are similar shuttle buses that run to locations closer to the main attractions.

Travelling from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport

This airport is further from the city centre. You can take a taxi to Taksim (costs approximately 75 TL, ~ 35-40 Euros).

You can also take the HAVATAŞ shuttle bus (12 TL, ~7 Euros). There are two shuttle buses every hour at :00 and :30. The journey takes ~1.5 hours depending on traffic.

4. Visas

People from some European countries do need a visa to enter Turkey, but this can be bought when entering the country (buy it from the counter just before you join the queue for passport control!). The price is ~15 €, and should be paid in cash (various currencies are accepted). You may also need your passport to be valid for 6 months after you enter Turkey.

There are more details here:

5. Currency and Electrical Outlets

The Turkish Currency is the Turkish Lira. The current exchange rate is:

1 Turkish Lira (TRY) ~ 0.43 €

Turkey operates on 220 volts, 50 Hz, European-style two round pin electrical sockets (C, E and F types). However, you will find that some sockets are “multi-sockets” and can take any kind of plug.
