COURSE SYLLABUS

I.COURSE DESCRIPTION (Catalog Description)

A study of the biological, psychological, and sociological concepts applicable to the needs of the family including child bearing and neonatal care. Topics include basic physiological changes related to pregnancy, fetal development, and nursing care of the family during labor and delivery and the puerperium.

II.LEARNING OUTCOMES (The Terminal Objectives of the Course)

The student will discuss human reproduction and fetal development as related to the normal aspects of childbearing; identify common complications of the mother and newborn during prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal periods; and relate characteristics of the normal newborn and the associated nursing interventions to meet identified health care needs utilizing the nursing process.

Instructional Goal:

The student will have knowledge of prenatal development, fetal circulation, and neonatal circulation and be able to differentiate the two types of twins.

2.0 PRENATAL CARE AND ADAPTATIONS TO PREGNANCY

Instructional Goal:

The student will have a knowledge of the preconception education and care, pregnancy, fetal development, physiological changes of pregnancy, signs of pregnancy, psychological adaptations of pregnancy, prenatal education and care, childbirth education and the nursing process. The student will be able to identify special needs of the pregnant adolescent, the single parent, and the older couple. This will provide the student the basis for entry into practice.

Objectives:

The student will have a competent level of understanding related to care of the mother and newborn at risk and be able to identify environmental hazards, and be able to utilize the nursing process in care of the women with complications during pregnancy.

4.0 NURSING CARE DURING LABOR AND BIRTH

Instructional Goals:

The student will have competent knowledge of the birth process, be able to differentiate between true and false labor and be able to determine appropriate nursing care utilizing the nursing process for the client in labor and during birth.

Unit Objectives:

4.2 Describe the four components (“four Ps”) of the birth process: powers, passage, passenger, and psyche.

4.3 Describe how the four Ps of labor interrelate to result in the birth of an infant.

4.4 Explain the normal processes of childbirth: premonitory signs, mechanisms of birth, and stages and phases of labor.

4.5 Explain how false labor differs from true labor.

4.6 Compare the advantages and disadvantages for each type of childbearing setting: hospital, free-standing birth center, and home.

4.7 Determine appropriate nursing care for the intrapartum patient, including the woman in false labor and the woman having a vaginal birth after a cesarean birth (VBAC).

4.8 Explain common nursing responsibilities during the birth including listening.

4.9 Discuss specific cultural beliefs the nurse may encounter when providing care to a woman in labor

4.10 Describe the care of the newborn immediately after birth.

4.11 Discuss appropriate attitudes when caring for the client with specific cultural beliefs.

The student will have a competent level of understanding related to the care of the mother and newborn at risk, and be able to describe obstetric procedures, the nurse’s role in each procedure, and recognize intrapartum complications. The student will be able to utilize the nursing process in caring for the client with complications during labor and birth.

7.0 THE FAMILY AFTER BIRTH

Instructional Goal:

The student nurse will acquire a knowledge base for care of the post-partum client and newborn. He/she will have the knowledge base to assess, teach and assist the client with physiosocial adaptations including cultural beliefs of the post-partum client and newborn. The student will have the knowledge base to provide for safety and identify common variations in the newborn, reflexes, age assessment, nutritional needs, and be able to identify common problems the newborn may encounter. The student nurse will be able to utilize the nursing process in caring for the family after birth. This will provide the student the basis for entry into practice.

Unit Objectives:

7.1 Define each key term listed.

7.2 Describe how to individualize postpartum and newborn nursing car for different patients.

7.3 Describe specific cultural beliefs that the nurse may encounter when providing postpartum and newborn care.

7.4 Describe postpartum changes in maternal systems and the nursing care associated with those changes.

7.5 Modify nursing assessments and interventions for the woman who has a cesarean birth.

7.6 Explain the emotional needs of postpartum women and their families.

7.7 Describe nursing care of the normal newborn.

7.8 Describe nursing interventions to promote optimal infant nutrition.

7.9 Identify signs and symptoms that may indicate a complication in the postpartum mother or infant.

7.10 Plan appropriate discharge teaching for the postpartum woman and her infant as part of customer service.
