Within fifteen years Britain andother nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could loseits meaning because everything which goes into the dumps(垃圾堆) would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is tofindouthow much ofthese raw materials could beprovided ifaplantfor recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.

Another new project isbeing set up to discoverthe best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this:first,it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel. The rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.

The first full-scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

The price of Tablet― a new type of computer ― is equal to the price of a laptop and it will run windows XP Tablet PC edition. Microsoft(微软) promises that the new type will be finished by the second half of 2002.

Eager to know what these new machines can do, I took a Tablet PC, which is still in test. The hardware is pretty slick. It starts off looking like a laptop, but then you take off part of the screen, swing it around 180°and push it down. Press a button to go from a beautiful countryside picture. It is great! The whole machine is about the size of a thick book, weighs under 1.3 kg. It makes you feel comfortable when you put it on your laps. It does not get hot and you can rest your wrist and arm on the screen without making your work terrible. And there is the flow of digital ink for you to write.

Of course, there are still some weak points for the machines. For instance, you cannot write too fast in Journal. If you do so, the words will not appear on time, that means, slower than the pen-writing. Microsoft said, this was an early version of the software. No one will accept this kind of handwriting software unless it feels just like handwriting. So Microsoft will take seven months to get it right.

I’m sure Bill Gates will be richer through selling this kind of machines. That may not make the antitrust lawyers happy, but at least it is not a joke any more.

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your enquiry of 5 June, asking us to quote shipping container to any EMP for 50 cases of medicines and chemical reagents.

The shipping containers we provide are of two sizes, namely 10ft. and 20ft., long and built to take loads up to two four tons respectively. They can be opened at both ends, thus making it possible to load and unload at the same time. They are both watertight and airtight and can be loaded and locked at the factory, if necessary.

There is also a saving in freight charges when separate consignments intended for the same port of destination are carried in one container.

We enclose a copy of our tariff and look forward to receiving your instructions.
