Background:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Regional Cooperation (DRC) helps to implement UNEP's global programs in the regions by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental problems and emergencies.

In this context, UNEP is implementing the GEF Funded African Rift Geothermal Development Facility Project (ARGeo) with a view to promote geothermal resource development and utilization by reducing risks associated with resource exploration. The ARGeo support will facilitate attraction of investors and lowering the cost of geothermal power development projects. One of the ARGeo components is to provide technical and financial Assistance for surface exploration studies for the ARGeo member countries (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda).

On this basis, UNEP received the proposal on “Geothermal Resource Assessment of TendahoGeothermal Field in Ethiopia” from the Geological Survey of Ethiopia (GSE) for its technical assistance for surface exploration studies. GSErequired, in its proposal, provision of scientific equipment and high level experts in areas of: (i) Geophysics and (ii) Principal Geothermal Scientist. UNEP selected this proposal as one of the prioritized projects to get a technical assistance for surface exploration studies. The results of these studies will provide useful information to identify the target sites for deep exploratory wells and minimize the risk of exploration.

In this regard, UNEP will recruit a “Principal Geothermal Scientist” to review the existing and new generated geoscientific data (geology andgeochemistry), and integrate as well as interpret and process all the geoscientific data. This is with a view to develop a conceptual model of the Ayrobera and Dubti (Tendaho) geothermal systems and locate target sites for deep drilling. In general, the Consultant will be required to provide advisory services on integration, processing and interpreting of all the geoscientific data as well as conceptual modeling using all geoscientific studies.

The consultant is expected to (i) review and prepare a report of the integrated geoscientific data of Ayrobera and Dubti (Tendaho); and (ii) Develop a conceptual geothermal model with a view to target sites for deep exploratory wells.

This position is located in the United Nations Environment Programme, Division of Regional Cooperation at the Nairobi duty station. The Consultant is expected to work under the general supervision of the Director, Geothermal Resource Assessment, GSE. UNEP in consultation with GSE will follow up and monitor the performance of the consultant in undertaking the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Data review and interpretation of existing and new geological and geochemical data
  • Check and advise on geochemicalfield data quality
  • Interpret new geochemical data to be generated
  • Model geological structures based on geological and geochemical data
  • Carry out all geoscientific data (geology, geochemistry and geophysics), integration and develop a geothermal conceptual model with a view to siting exploration wells

Ultimate result of services

  • Revised detailed geological and geochemical report of Ayrobera-Dubti (Tendaho) geothermal field
  • Prepare and develop an integrated conceptual model of Ayrobera-Dubti (Tendaho) using geological, geochemical and the interpreted geophysical data/model.
  • Locate target sites for deep exploration wells
  • Present the final results in the Technical Review Meeting
