Background:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. This post is located in UNEP/DCPI at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head, Internet Unit, and the general guidance of the Director, DCPI, and in collaboration with the other UNEP divisional, regional and out-posted offices, the incumbent will be responsible for the translation of websites and other relevant content in to Arabic.
Responsibilities:
Specified Service / Deliverables; Under the general guidance of the Director of DCPI and under the direct supervision of the Head, Internet Unit, the Consultant will carry out the following tasks:
1. Develop, update and upload www.unep.org/arabic
· Update UNEP Arabic websites
· Proofread all content to be posted on UNEP Arabic websites
· Edit available content in Arabic for Internet use
· Translate selected promotional materials into Arabic for general distribution and posting on the website
· Translate website content from English to Arabic or from Arabic to English
2. Develop UNEP social media in Arabic
· Assist in the development and expansion of Arabic social media networks
· Manage and monitor the Arabic social media networks
· Translate messages and post on Arabic social media networks
3. Other tasks
· Participate in other DCPI activities (training, meetings, workshops,)
· Perform as an integral member of the Internet Unit Language Team to ensure consistency of language versions of www.unep.org
· Promote UNEP's work in the Arabic speaking world
· Analyze requirements of Arabic website users/readers and provide them with pertinent environmental information
· Perform other related duties as assigned
Output expectations:
(i) More efficient and effective public visibility of UNEP activities on the www.unep.org/arabic, website;
(ii) Updated, relevant and interesting web pages designed according to UNEP Guidelines;
(iii) Improved public awareness of the relevant environmental activities of UNEP;
(iv) Designed and developed web pages on www.unep.org/arabic in accordance with UNEP guidelines, with close direction from the supervisor;
(v) Substantive contribution made to the achievement of UNEP’s main goals in the field of web design and development, content management and information dissemination
Competencies:
Professionalism: Knowledge of information management. Ability to draft and translate materials (English/Arabic) on a wide range of topics. Knowledge of general vocabulary of a level and range appropriate to the content and the difficulty level of the text. Ability to maintain an adequate speed and volume of output, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results.
Teamwork: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity; Ability to lead and gain assistance and cooperation of others in a team endeavor; Ability to work independently and to participate effectively in a team based information sharing environment.
Communication: Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and persuasively, including the ability to defend and explain difficult issues; Ability to draft/edit a variety of reports on UN policy issues and strategies in English and Arabic.
Planning and Organizing: Ability to identify priority activities and assignments, handle multiple activities and projects concurrently and make necessary adjustments as required; Ability to foresee risks and allow for contingencies when planning.
Qualifications:
Education: University degree in linguistic studies or journalism, combined with Computer, Information Systems or other related field. Equivalent combination of education and certification with a relevant combination of academic and professional qualifications.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in translation (English/Arabic) and information management/public information, in the area of environment or related field of which one should be at the international level preferably in the United Nations.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic and English is required; knowledge of another UN language would be an asset. Good drafting/writing skills, as well as good oral communication skills required.
