This Week’s Readings
First Reading: Wisdom 18: 6-9.
The Book of Wisdom speaks to us of the night of the Passover deliverance, when the people of Israel waited and prepared for the Lord’s coming to free them from the slavery of Egypt. It is with the same preparedness that we have to await the coming of the Lord Jesus.
Second Reading: Hebrews 11: 1-2, 8-19.
Abraham, the man of faith, journeyed into the unknown, hoping in the promise of God.
Gospel: Luke 12: 32-48.
Our trust must be complete. Jesus tells us to be ready at any time for his coming.
Points for Reflection
Moses was appointed by God to lead the people of Israel out of their slavery in Egypt. It meant a long journey through the desert, with dangers from enemies, disagreements among themselves, the prospect of hunger, thirst and discomfort, and ignorance of where God would finally lead them (First Reading).
Earlier Abraham had responded to a call from God to an unknown land. He let go of all his past settled life and went out “not knowing where he was to go” (Second Reading).
What kept these people on their journey? It was faith: “They looked forward to the city whose builder and maker is God”.
This call to go forward to the unknown, moving step by step as the light or darkness allows, was not made only to Moses, the people of Israel and Abraham. It is made also to all of us who are followers of Jesus Christ (Gospel).
Our Christian faith does not dispel completely the darkness which surrounds us. The situation in which we find ourselves is not different from the one in which most human beings find themselves: the uneasy, uncomfortable and unsafe situation of pilgrims who walk in the darkness.
The only certainty which our Christian faith offers us is that we are in God’s hands and that our treasure is in our being messengers and instruments of the Kingdom of God. This certainty should be enough to give us the wisdom and courage to walk steadily, firmly and watchfully, determined to overcome with all our strength the obstacles and contradictions we come across almost daily on our journey.
As Christians, we are called to walk in the dark of the present world with our eyes open and our hearts filled with hope, and to spread this hope to all those who walk with us.
