The American River Ranger District on the Tahoe National Forest is currently outreaching for a Culturist, GS-0462-08/09;Forestry Technician or GS-0460-07/09; Forester, Not-To-Exceed (NTE) 1 year Term appointment (26/0). DUTIES: This position is located on a district where the candidate serves as a member of the vegetation management team. The position works directly for the District Culturist.
Primary Duties- Silviculture:

  • Monitors and inspects timber stand improvement and reforestation activities for compliance and conducts final inspections under contract such as: pre-commercial thinning, reforestation, tree release, and cone collection
  • Prepares and submits daily diary inspection reports on contracts
  • Performs reforestation and stocking surveys in accordance with established procedures to determine planting needs, need for site preparation, plantation conditions, and seedling survival
  • Performs force account tree planting and cone collection
  • Traverses project areas, lays-out unit boundaries, delineates watercourses, determines acreage, and drafts maps of those areas based on field analysis
  • Assists in preparation of the technical specifications for timber stand improvement, reforestation, tree release, or animal damage control contracts.
  • Assists in entering and editing data in FACTS.
  • The work requires knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of, forestry tools and equipment, service contract preparation and inspection, various woods surveys, GPS, and basic GIS knowledge for mapping, data entry, and data editing. A basic knowledge of spreadsheets and word document processing is also required.
  • During the field season, the duties primarily occur in the field in all-weather conditions and rugged terrain
  • Makes recommendations to a certified silviculturist through field evaluations
  • Develops contracts
  • Reviews planned projects for NEPA compliance and consistency with current laws and regulations
  • Consults with other Specialists for correct implementation of planned projects
  • Maintains and updates SAI (Sale Area Improvement) plans for active timber sales
  • Leads a team of employees performing work up to the GS-07 level.

Duty Station: Foresthill, CA

  • Foresthill is a beautiful mountain community dating back to the California Gold Rush and is located 17 miles east from Auburn and Interstate 80. It is located at approximately 3100’ elevation on the Foresthill Divide between the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Foresthill is surrounded on the south and west by the Auburn State Recreation Area, on the north by BLM lands, and on the east by National Forest. The American River Ranger District is distinguished with a portion of Granite Chief Wilderness, the North Fork American Wild River and Placer County Big Trees (northernmost grove of Giant Sequoias). The current population on the Foresthill Divide is approximately 6,100. The area is also known for its beauty, rafting, hiking, horseback riding, mountain bike riding, mining, and off highway vehicle activities.
  • Housing: Housing in Foresthill is primarily rural flavored and home prices in Foresthill start at approximately $165,000. Rental homes range from approximately $600/month on up. Government barracks may be available.
  • Schools: An elementary (K-8) and a high school are available for students. Sierra Community College is a 35 minute commute and UC Davis and CSU Sacramento are within commuting distance.
  • Additionally, there is a grocery store, daycare facilities, a post office, a hardware store, 4 restaurants, 2 gas stations, a park with softball diamonds, tennis courts and a public swimming pool.
  • Auburn is the closest town with both rural and urban settings and home values range from $200,000 to $400,000. The town of Auburn offers additional shopping choices, restaurants, theatre and recreational activities.
