PATHOLOGY EXPERIENCE

I received my undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD Pathology) medical training at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, one of the premiere medical Institutes of India. The Institute is a tertiary medical care center for the State of Karnataka, with inpatient bed strength of over 1,700. During my residency in pathology, I underwent intensive training in all major sub-specialties of the subject including Histopathology, Cytopathology, Haematology, Clinical Pathology and Autopsy Techniques. On an average the pathology department received 9000 to 10,000 requests/year for histopathology and cytology each and being a tertiary level institute there was exposure to all kinds of common and rare entities. Autopsies comprised of about 20 to 30 cases/year. In addition I did a 2 months attachment in hospital autopsies at Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle, UK in 2005 during which I personally performed (under supervision) 25 complete autopsies and observed many more.

I joined King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH), Riyadh, after my residency and worked first as aspecialist registrar and then as a specialist senior registrar, between 2002 and 2011. During this time I was also involved in the reporting non-neoplastic kidney biopsies, both native (predominantly) and post-transplant. KKUH is a 1000 bed facility with all general and subspecialty medical services. The hospital provides primary and tertiary level care services for patients from Northern Riyadh. Pathology department at KKUH is an active unit. The yearly turn over for histopathology and nongyn-cytopathology is approximately 7000cases/year and 2000 cases/year respectively. The gyn-cytopathology amounts to about 2500cases/year. The non-neoplastic kidney biopsies amount to about 120 cases/year.

I also completeda one-year clinical and research fellowship in kidney pathology at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Canadafrom July 2011 to July 2012. University of Alberta is a tertiary care facility, recognized for its highly advanced organ transplant units. The University also provides leading edge facilities for research in transplant pathology. My work involved reporting on native and transplant kidney biopsies. I have also had the opportunity of reviewing archived renal biopsies of the last 5 years. I took part in and present the weekly clinic-pathological meetings with renal pathologists and nephrologists. I also took part in research.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I worked as a tutor in Anatomy and Pharmacology after my internship and found it enjoyable. During my residency in pathology, I opted to work as a tutor also and conducted lectures and practicals in pathology for Medical, Dental, Physiotherapy and other Allied Health students.

In my 9 years at King Khalid Medical College and Hospital I conducted many lectures, tutorials, small group discussions and practical classes for Medical and Dental college students. I have also conducted a few lectures for first year pathology residents and first year facio-maxillary dental residents.

I am currently involved in taking lectures for medical students, dental student and histopathology residents
