Dear Parents,

It was so nice to see so many of you during National School Lunch Week! Thank you for taking time out of your day to enjoy lunch with your child and support our cafeteria. We appreciate all that Mrs. Tomlin and Mrs. Ramsey do for us in the cafeteria!

Third graders have been working on using meaning/context clues to help them with unfamiliar words in their reading. 3.4 c and d

This week we worked on math SOL 3.4 students estimated solutions and solved single-step and multi-step problems involving the sum (+) or difference (-) of two whole numbers, each 9,999 or less. We also began learning about SOL 3.17 this week. Students will collect and organize data, using observations, measurements, surveys, or experiments. They will construct a line plot, a picture graph, or bar graph to represent data. They will read and interpret the data represented in line plots, bar graphs, and picture graphs. The will write sentences analyzing the data.

We will continue our focus on science SOL 3.6 next week. Students will be learning about the world’s ecosystems. We will learn about the diverse plants and animals that share limited resources. We will cover aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems including: ponds, marshes, swamps, streams, rivers, oceans, deserts, grasslands, rain forests, and forest. We will use the terms population and community as we discuss the animals and plants within each ecosystem. We will also discuss our role in conserving limited resources.

We will continue learning about Greece and Rome next week. We will focus on 3.4 and 3.7 for both Greece and Rome. We will discuss and describe the physical and human characteristics of Greece and Rome and be able to explain how the people of Greece and Rome adapted to their environment to meet their needs. The students will also explain how producers in ancient Greece and Rome used natural resources, human resources, and capital resources in the production of goods and services. I would like to finish our Greek and Roman unit with the annual third grade Greek and Roman Banquet/ Olympics. This will be next Friday, October 21st. Parents are asked to bring in a Greek or Roman dish for sharing at the banquet. I will contribute a Greek salad and grape juice. Students are encouraged to dress in Greek or Roman attire. They may dress as a Greek or Roman citizen or as one of our Greek and Roman gods. Please let me know if you are able to send in a Greek or Roman food for tasting…olives, bread, cheese, baklava…..Yum
