OBJECTIVE:
Using the state’s standards, identify specific information knowledge (content) and procedural knowledge (process expectations) within their respective areas of specialization they will be asked to teach in secondary education programs.
READING:
In the Duplass textbook, refer to the following as needed: topics 3, 11, 12, and Unit 8 (topics 41-45).
ACTIVITIES:
- Download a hard copy of Pennsylvania’s State Standards (i.e., PDE’s Chapter 5) that govern your area of specialization (Citizenship teachers have several areas).
- In one course in your field placement, compare the textbook used to the standards. Try to determine whether the textbook used is (PA) standards-based.
- If the textbook does not appear to be based on the PA state standards, ask your cooperating teacher what he/she does to accommodate the fact that it is not based on our state’s standards. How does he/she meet the standards if the textbook is not based on the standards?
- At your field placement, ask your cooperating teacher to list the courses taught in your specialization area in his/her district in grades 7-12 and ask whether and how the courses relate to the state’s standards.
- At your field placement, search the district’s Web site (OR ask your cooperating teacher about the district’s documents that contain information they share with parents). Determine if and how the district explains how it addresses the state’s standards in grades 7-12.
- Download a hard copy of Pennsylvania’s State Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.
- Read the introduction section. Which teachers are responsible for covering these standards in their classes?
- How will you cover these standards in your classes. How might you be asked to address these standards in your area of specialization? List several ideas.

DIRECTIONS:
1)Downloadthe following two documents:
- A hard copy of Pennsylvania’s State Standards (i.e., PDE’s Chapter 5) that govern your area of specialization (remember that Citizenship teachers have several areas).
- A hard copy of the standards for your area promulgated by your field’s professional organization (e.g., NCSS, NCTM, etc.).
2)Using a highlighter, identify specific information knowledge (content) and procedural knowledge (process expectations) within your respective area of specialization that you are required to know and required to teach.
3)Review the highlighted copies.
- In a brief essay, discuss your level of preparedness to teach all of this content.
- If you are not fully prepared, what might you do to increase your level of preparedness?
NOTE: If this activity causes you concern, secure a test preparation book for your area of certification, maybe those used for PRAXIS II and/or the Regents exams in NY. Take the practice tests between now and the time you sit for your PRAXIS II exam, and look up your wrong answers.
