Technology Integrated Lesson Plan

Multiples/Arrays

Introduction:

Students use the digital camera to find arrays in the world around them.

Standards:

Math: Number and Operations

Instructional programs from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 should enable all students to understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.

Activity:

1. After an introduction to multiplication and the concept of arrays to represent a product, students should look around the classroom and identify any arrays that they see. After they have identified them, they should explain and state the product that the array represents. Then, they are instructed to look around their homes, neighborhood, etc. for other arrays that they may find. For example, a student may find a

3 x 5 array of cookies in a tray at the grocery store.

2. When the array is identified, the student should use the digital camera to record the array.

3. In the classroom, make posters for each number 2 through 12.

4. The students should print their pictures of the arrays, label the dimensions, and post them to the correct poster which indicates the total number of objects in the array.

5. When the posters are completed, hold a class discussion with each child showing their pictures and explaining how the array represents the product.
