Technology in the Learning Spaces

Meeting Minutes

April 19, 2010

Attendees: Mark Kasselhut, Laura Hardesty, Sande Johnson-Byers, Rhonda Dixon, Brad Lawton, Sherry Ross

Create Outline for Report:

We will review the report outline in the full meeting on April 26, 2010.

Recommendations:

Both faculty and students want a basic technology equipped classroom. All of our benchmark institutions already have or are planning to equip 100% of their classrooms; in order to stay competitive U of L needs to do the same; 5 of 7 benchmark institutions are considering an ongoing budget for maintenance and replacement.

·  Equip remaining classrooms with a basic level of technology.

·  Create a source of centralized funds to maintain and replace equipment in the classroom.

·  Prioritize schedules to make rooms available for central use when not in use by ‘owner’ school to address ‘territoriality of classrooms’.

·  All learning spaces must be entered in Resource 25 for scheduling.

·  Give faculty a choice of desktop or laptop computer. If there is a funding issue, use centralized funds to make up the difference between laptop and desktop. These funds would only be available for faculty who attend a technology training ‘boot camp’ offered by the Delphi Center. Replacement and maintenance will be the responsibility of the department.

·  If state funding is approved for the new academic building on Belknap campus, the building should contain a significant number of high tech classrooms (to meet more than the basic need).

·  Improve training and documentation for the use of technology in the classroom. Conduct workshops in the effective use of PowerPoint.

·  Increase use of BlackBoard, Tegrity and clickers in more classes. Stock clickers in tech store.

·  Improve availability of chat and collaborative tools in BlackBoard.

·  Increase and better maintain collaborative learning spaces.

·  Increase information regarding lab locations for students.

TO DO’s:

Laura will create a profile of a typical faculty member and a typical student.

Sherry and Mark will validate both clicker polls to support recommendations..

Rhonda will revise the price of a standard room as reported by Vincent based on minimum with desktop and without desktop.
