TITLE: Designing a Derby Car (Practice Plan)

OBJECTIVES(Desired Student Outcomes):

After this lesson the students should be able to produce (2) two view sketches of their potential vehicle shapes.

After this lesson the students should become familiar with and be able enlarge previously designed vehicle shapes.

MATERIALS/TOOLS/RESOURCES

Practice plan worksheet, examples of previous designedpractice plan worksheets, and examples of objects students can relate to with top and side views, and derby vehicles pencils.

ATTENDANCE:

Take roll in grade book while students complete warm up activity.

MOTIVATION:

At this point students should have at least 8 Thumbnail Sketch ideas can begin refining their designs using the Practice Plan worksheet. They will be one step closer to getting a block of wood.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Review previous discussions about design ideas.
  2. Draw or have previously drawn examples of thumbnail sketches on the board.
  3. Demonstrate how to select a desirable thumbnail sketch idea and enlarge it in a previously drawn practice plan blank on the board. Simply demonstrating how to enlarge a shape.
  4. When students are ready and they have completed the Thumbnail Sketch worksheet they may engage in Step 3b Refine the Possible Solutionsof the engineering design process.
  5. Print the Practice Plan worksheet and select your favorite 2 thumbnails and draw them in the space provided. Whether students are working in a group or individually, everyone needs to complete a Practice Plan Worksheet.

Example of Practice Plan blanks –Students need 2 ideas! Each idea should have a side view. They may complete the top views for extra credit. They will need to draw the shapes inside the blocks. They will need to color their shapes to receive the highest possible score on their evaluation.

  1. Monitor student activity and provide assistance as needed.
  2. Students may be working on additional projects during class.

CLOSURE:

Explain to students they will soon begin working on their full size designs. These designs will be used to create a pattern which will be transferredto their block of wood to help them cut out the shape.

Provide individual assistance if necessary.
