Course Expectations
Overview
We are living in an information age, which demands a more highly educated work force, able to understand the technical complexities, which have impacted every aspect of our culture. If America is to remain competitive in the world markets, our citizens must be more conversant with Technology than ever before in history. Technology Education is one of the elements of the Regents Action plan.
At HamburgMiddle School, Introduction to Technology is a hands on program, which uses Math, Science, Investigation, Design, Construction and Problem Solving to present a broad view of Technology. This program will emphasize Engineering Design, Tools, Resources, and Technological Processes, Computer Technology, Technological Systems, History and Evolutions of Technology, Impacts of Technology, and Management of Technology.
Schedule
7th Grade: Seventh grade students will attend Technology Classes every other day for 40 weeks. The students will rotate through three different technology rooms with their teacher and class to best take advantage of the facilities. This rotation will occur roughly every thirteen weeks.
Concentrations: Intro to Computers, Choosing resources, Technical Sketching, History of Technology, Processing Resources, and Materials Processing
8th Grade: Eighth grade students will attend Technology Classes every otherday for 40 weeks. The students will rotate through three different technology rooms with their teacher and class to best take advantage of the facilities. This rotation will occur roughly every thirteen weeks.
Concentrations: Computer Technology, Basic Electronics, Communication, Manufacturing, Construction Systems, Transportation systems, and Impacts of Technology.
Expectations:
1. Each student is asked to bring in a $5.00 lab fee at the beginning of the semester. This will cover the cost of projects which they will produce throughout the semester.
2. Students are expected to arrive on time with a pen, pencil, notebook or folder, and paper.
3. Acceptable behavior, safe work habits and proper language are expected at all times.
4. Each student is expected to participate in all class activities and to be responsible for cleanup at the end of each class.
5. Each student is expected to obey reasonable requests from the teacher and to follow instructions correctly. Any student that cannot demonstrate safe machine practices will not be allowed to use tools or equipment
6. It is expected that all laboratory activities will be completed to the best of the students’ ability by the announced due date.
7. Students are expected to listen and not to create a disturbance when the instructor is speaking.

Technology Safety Rules
These rules are for your protection and everyone is expected to obey them at all times.
A student with careless work habits not only endangers him/herself, but also everyone in the room.
- Horseplay, excessive noise, and fooling around are not permitted in the technology classroom.
- The instructor, not the passing bell, dismisses students at the end of the class.
- No student may operate any machine until the teacher has demonstrated its safe and proper usage.
- Never use dull or damaged equipment. Report this to the teacher immediately.
- No student may operate any machine unless the teacher is present.
- Report all accidents (no matter how small) to the teacher immediately.
- Never try to stop a moving part of a machine with your hand.
- Never remove a guard from a machine.
- Never walk away from a machine while any parts are moving.
- Only one person may use a machine at one time, all others must stay clear.
- Never bother, distract, or talk to any person using a machine.
- Suitable eye protection must be worn at all times.
- Carry tools with the sharp edge down.
- Loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair must be removed or tied back before any tools or machines are used.
- Use the right tool for the job and don’t rush your work.
- Think about what you are doing and ask questions when you do not understand something.
