Play therapy is a rapidly growing field of specialized psychotherapy techniques and interventions for use with children and adults in a variety of settings. This conference will offer participants the opportunity to hear a renowned speaker. On Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18 Dr. Janine Shelby, Ph.D., RPT-S, will present a two day workshop entitled Developmentally Sensitive Posttraumatic Play Therapy.

Cancellation Policy: A refund of the registration fee will be made if requested prior to April 4, 2009. No refunds will be issued after April 11, 2009. An administrative charge of $40 will be retained on all refunds. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

In this presentation, a variety of treatment techniques, approaches, and manuals will be presented for play therapists who work with traumatized youngsters across the developmental age span. Interventions will be described as they apply differentially to infants and toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and adolescents. The presentation will focus on treatments that are evidence- or research-based, but will include a range of other interventions.In addition to treatments for each developmental era, the cognitive capacities, memory, and coping patterns typical of youth at each developmental stage will be reviewed. Crisis, acute, and longer-term intervention strategies and protocols will be discussed for use with survivors of many different traumatic events.A description of posttraumatic parent-child dyadic treatments will supplement the individual therapies and techniques presented.The seminar format will include case vignettes, recent research findings andresources to stay abreast of new findings, internet training resources, experiential activities, and video-taped demonstrations.

PRESENTER INFORMATION

Janine Shelby, Ph.D., RPT-S is an Assistant Professor in the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is the Director of Child Psychology Training and the Child Trauma Clinic at Harbor-UCLAMedicalCenter. In the Association for Play Therapy, Dr. Shelby has served as President of the Foundation and President of the California Branch of APT. Dr. Shelby's academic work focuses on the use of developmentally sensitive intervention methods for traumatized children. She has provided trauma-related training and humanitarian aid in more than 15 countries, and has served as a consult for the NationalCenter for Child Traumatic Stress, Operation USA, Doctors of the World, and several humanitarian aid organizations.
