1Introduction

FLEXIM Americas Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of FLEXIM GmbH, established in the United States in 2005 as the North & Central American office to manage engineering, development, production sales & marketing and after-sale services to our customer in the region. Since this time FLEXIM Americas has successfully delivered over 8,000 metering solutions for the most demanding of metering conditions including to all of the majors in HVAC energy measurement, gas measurement and is commonly used for billing applications.

2Ultrasonic Flowmeter Measuring Principle

The Transit Time Difference Method

The transmission speed of an ultrasonic signal depends on the flow velocity of the carrier medium; similar to a swimmer swimming against the current, an ultrasonic signal moves slower against the flow direction of the medium than when in flow direction.

For the measurement, two ultrasonic pulses are sent through the medium, one in flow direction, and a second one against it. The transducers are alternatively working as emitter and receiver.

The transit time of the ultrasonic signal propagating in flow direction is shorter than the transit time of the signal propagating against flow direction.

The transit-time difference Δt is measured and allows the determination of the average flow velocity on the propagation path of the ultrasonic signals. A profile correction is performed to obtain the average flow velocity on the cross-section of the pipe, which is proportional to the volume flow.

Since ultrasounds propagate in solids, the transducers can be mounted onto the pipe. Measurement is Non-Invasive and there is no need to cut the pipe or interrupt any process

3Thermal Energy Measurement

FLEXIM’s thermal energy BTU meter is one integrated metering solution. Using precision 1000 ohm RTD’s matched to 0.03degF to measure supply and return temperature, combined with 1% NIST traceable flow measurement, the FLEXIM BTU meter integrates the measurements to a BTU or Ton measurement. Along with Flow, Temperature, BTU’s, Tons, Totals, there is also diagnostic information that provides confidence in the integrity of the measurement.

5Description of the proposed ultrasonic flowmeter

5.1Features/Benefits

The proposed ultrasonic flowmeter has the following features:

  • Calibration –Each transducer pair is factory calibrated and receives a NIST traceable 5-point wet flow calibration to 1% of RATE.
  • Extremely accurate temperature measurement – Matched pair temperature RTD’s to ensure accuracy of ±0.03°F differential measurement with certificate traceable to NIST standards.
  • “Fit for Purpose” FLEXIM Transducers – Factory “matched” and calibrated Stainless Steel Transducers (hermetically sealed) and armored stainless steel cable delivers the robustness required of a portable or permanent device. “Intelligent” design – transducer contains a microchip read by the meter that contains the calibration information. Competing devices are error prone when the transducer type is not input correctly.
  • Transducer Temperature Compensation – The only Clamp-on meter that employs an RTD inside the transducer block as per ASME MFC 5M. A temperature algorithm compensates for calibration shifts due to temperature changes. Without this compensation the accuracy drift due to temperature change will 1% for a 30degF change.
  • Broadened Application Range – FLEXIM incorporates a dynamic power delivery scheme that delivers the power to the transducers required to get the signal through the range of pipe sizes to be measured.
  • Ease of Use – The meter is designed to be intuitive and is very easy to program. Installation of entire meter can be easily accomplished in 4 hours or less.
  • FLEXIM “Flexibility” – All FLEXIM meters can be configured to “adapt” to the application conditions at hand. If the upstream straight run is less than 10 diameters , the users may employ a number of mitigating techniques:
  • ‘Multi-bounce’ transducer mounting allows the meter to average out local disturbances of the flow profile over a longer axial distance on the pipe. An even number of traverses (up to 8) simply cancels all cross-flow, non-axial influences on the flow velocity measured.
  • Proper location of the interrogating sonic beam (in the plane of an upstream elbow for example) assures that the instrument will ‘see’ the fast flowing core of the liquid flow stream.
  • Multi-beam interrogation of the flow stream through the use of two or more transducer pairs to average out asymmetrical flow velocities.
  • Reduced Noise Susceptibility – All FLEXIM flow computers are fully shielded and utilize TRIAX cabling (provides for an additional armored outer shield) to prevent/minimize the influence of external noise sources.
  • Signal Detection – The signal processing of the transmitted signal is NOT based upon a ZERO crossing detection which relies heavily on a “match” between the wall thickness of the pipe and a selected transducer’s operating frequency. Rather FLEXIM employs a signal correlation function in which the entire receive signal is utilized resulting in a more robust signal detection process.
  • Application Guarantee – All meters sold. FLEXIM goes to great lengths to qualify each and every application and as such provides an application guarantee on each meter sold. We will ensure that satisfaction with ALL metering solutions provided by FLEXIM.
  • Support – In addition to FLEXIM’s full-service operation center on Long Island, New York, we have technical personnel on the east, west coasts, Southern and Central States.FLEXIM also provides a “free” telephone hotline for assistance “when you need it”, including after hours 7 days a week till 12AM.
  • Significant Reference Base – FLEXIM has the references that prove FLEXIM to be the premium BTU meter available today.
  • Total Cost of Ownership – No need for recalibration, no wear mechanism, no pressure drop, no additional flanges, valving, by-pass, etc...
  • Proven Reliability – 190 year calculated MTBF

6Low Flow measurement capability of FLEXIM

In thermal energy submetering there are many instances of off-peak very low usage. The meters ability to detect low flow velocities is critical. Not detected these rates become “free energy”.FLEXIM meters are unique in their ability to measure the lowest flow velocities.

Below is a data set from Harvard University. They are supplying chilled water in the month of February to a building that has climate controlled laboratories. The meter is detecting flow velocities from .01ft/sec to .05ft/sec. These velocities are below the detection point of most other types of meters.

7Measurement Data and Download Software

The FLEXIMF601PE meter is equipped with an internal data logger. The internal data logger can store up to 60 days of data at a 10 minute storage intervals. The following data can be stored:

  • Date Time Stamp
  • Instantaneous Volume Flow Rate
  • Volume Flow Total (positive and negative)
  • Instantaneous Energy Rate
  • Energy Total
  • Instantaneous Flow Velocity
  • Supply Temperature
  • Return Temperature
  • Sound Speed Diagnostic – used to verify the accuracy of an installation
  • Signal Strength Diagnostic – used to verify ability of the ultrasonic signal to measure the liquid in question
  • Advanced signal diagnostics used in challenging applications (such as liquids at +400 Degrees F, viscous hydrocarbons, gases, etc…) to detect the presence of air, high turbulence, etc…
