TEAM INSTRUCTIONS THAT WILL BE GIVEN TO THE STUDENTS AT THE MATH OLYMPICS

PLEASE REHEARSE THESE WITH YOUR STUDENTS TO FACILITATE THEIR TEAM WORK

  1. There are several containers of hand sanitizer spread about the room. Please make liberal use of them so that we are not spreading any germs.
  1. As your team WORKS TOGETHER on the problems, adults will be walking around, evaluating your work as a TEAM. Respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, cooperation, problem-solving skills, and solutions are ALL part of the evaluation.
  1. You may work on the problems in any order that you choose as a group.
  1. You may ask questions of one another in your group—that is why you are a team! YOU MAY NOT ASK ANY OTHER TEAMS FOR HELP.
  1. YOU MAY NOT ASK ANY ADULTS WHAT A PROBLEM MEANS OR HOW TO DO IT. AS A TEAM YOU MUST DETERMINE WHAT THE PROBLEM REQUIRES BASED ONLY ON THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN AND YOUR TEAM’S PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITIES. If necessary, as a team, make a “judgement call”—you may not ask anyone outside of your team to help you with such a decision.
  1. If you need to leave the Activity Room, first ask a supervising adult for permission so that we always know where you are.
  1. In the folder, there are several sets of activities that are unique to your grade.
  1. For some of the activities, you are given a page on which you are instructed to DO YOUR WORK ON THIS PAGE. This is the page you can write all over to figure out the solution. Then, the solution is to be copied onto the page included that says HAND THIS ONE IN.
  1. When your WHOLE TEAM AGREES that an activity is completed as far as your are able to take it, be sure your school name and grade is on the solution, and HAND IT IN TO THE TABLE ASSIGNED FOR YOUR GRADE. Do not keep completed activities at your table, but hand them in AS SOON AS YOUR TEAM DECIDES IT IS READY TO BE HANDED IN.
  1. You will be told how long you have to work on all of the problems.
  1. At the appointed time,
  2. all solutions that have not yet been submitted will be handed in for evaluation;
  3. any scrap paper/garbage will be thrown in the garbage cans provided. Be sure that garbage on top of your table, as well as on the floor, is picked up, and is thrown out;
  4. any remaining pages should be returned to the file folder and left on the table; and
  5. any items that you were given and did not use should be left on the table in the appropriate containers in which you received them.
  1. At the conclusion, when you are released from the activities room, you will have about 15 minutes to wait before the awards will be given in the auditorium. During that time, you may use washrooms, go outside (if the weather is appropriate), QUIETLY wait in the foyer outside the auditorium (because MCA classes are still in session), or you can QUIETLY wait in the auditorium. BE SURE THAT YOU WILL BE CLOSE ENOUGH TO GO TO THE AUDITORIUM WHEN IT IS TIME FOR THE AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED.
