MISSION STATEMENT FOR MYRNA’S MUSIC

--To promote the love of music making to all students;

--To help build self-esteem and confidence, whether in a private or public setting;

--To teach self-discipline and patience through music.

POLICY STATEMENTS

TEACHING METHOD

Because all children are different and learn in different ways, I adapt my teaching style to the level, ability and age of the student using a range of teaching materials and books so as to find the best approach for each child.

REGISTRATION

All students must register annually by completing the Student Registration Form. New students will be charged a one-time $15.00 registration fee. Once a student registers I assume that the student will remain for the duration of the school year. Should the student decide to stop his/her lessons mid-year, I would appreciate a courtesy two-week notice.

MAKE-UP POLICY CHANGES – Help keep the teacher healthy!

My Make-up policy for the coming year has changed. The previous practice of offering make-up lessons is being discontinued in all cases except in the event of my illness. In that case I will try to reschedule a lesson within 2 weeks of the originally-scheduled lesson. However, if more than 2 weeks lapse because our schedules cannot accommodate a make-up date then your child will lose that lesson. However, even if your child may lose a lesson, please do not bring a sick child to me. He learns nothing and there is an excellent that I too will become ill forcing cancellation of others’ lessons.

LESSON LENGTH

In general, thirty -35 minutes is standard, depending on the level of the student. Thirty minutes is usually sufficient at the outset. Intermediate and

more advanced students and those in the Royal Conservatory Program will require 45 minutes or more.

SUCCESSFUL PRACTICE AND PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Family involvement and encouragement are extremely important to success at the piano. I encourage parents of young children to attend lessons with the child initially, so that parents will know how to monitor a child’s practice. At home a child should have a quiet place for practice and a specifically designated practice time (a minimum of 5 days a week). Some children work better if practice is divided into 2 daily sessions rather than one longer period. Length of practice can vary from week to week depending on the difficulty of a week’s assignment. A practice goal should be established for each practice period: counting, learning a fingering pattern, scales, or memorizing, for example. When a goal is stated the child knows why she is at the piano. Mastery of the specific goal or skill is more important than the length of time at the piano. Practice is not just playing pieces; it is actively listening for imperfections, for steadiness of a beat, for the beauty of the music and looking for ways to improve. Learning a new piece requires slow, deliberate practice, and concentration on correct hand position, fingering, accurate counting—aloud-- and note reading. It is important that your child acquires correct skills from the very beginning.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Performance opportunities are available each year. Information will be periodically sent to your email address and posted on my website to inform you of upcoming events. Be sure that I have your correct e-mail address.

TERMINATION POLICY

Students may be terminated at any time for:

1)  Rudeness or inappropriate behavior;

2)  Failure to practice regularly;

3)  Being consistently unprepared at lessons (most likely due to insufficient practice time)

No refunds are given when a student is terminated.

To the Student(s):

I understand the importance of regular practice, and the need to set weekly or daily practice goals for myself. I know there will be times when I do not want to practice, but I will try my very best to be honest with myself and my teacher, and to do my best work so as to have a very successful year. Any other outcome is unacceptable for myself, my parents, and my teacher.
