TEACHERS’ TRAVELLING EXPENSE SCHEME - SEPTEMBER 2003

All teachers are entitled to receive reimbursement of expenses incurred during the course of their employment when undertaking authorised journeys to either other sites/establishments or for additional journeys to and from home to their designated base for activities outside of the normal working day.

Reimbursement will be as follows:-

1Public Transport Costs

The actual amount expended will be reimbursed subject to:

a)bona fide receipts being provided.

b)the cost incurred being the most economical means of travelling.

NB The cost of taxi fares is not normally reimbursed unless it can be demonstrated that no other reasonable form of public transport was available or the excess time required would extend the length of the day to such an extent that an overnight stay would be required.

2Car Mileage Allowance

An allowance in respect of journeys undertaken by car is payable in the following circumstances:-

a)for journeys within DMBC and neighbouring authorities where travel by car is most practicable.

b)for other journeys where no reasonable public transport is available or where the time involved would unreasonably extend the length of the working day. This would normally be in excess of 10 hours.

c)for classroom teachers paid on the main/upper pay spine additional journeys from home to school to undertake either extra curricular activities or parents meetings etc during evenings/weekends and school holidays. Advanced Skills Teachers and teachers paid on the Leadership spine may claim for any additional approved journeys from home to school during the school term but not for an initial journey during weekends or school holiday periods.

This journey is subject to a maximum of 25 miles per round trip and is taxable in accordance with Inland Revenue Regulations.

d)Claims should not be made for the following:-

i)INSET/Out of School Learning Activities where teachers receive a separate salary payment for the activity.

ii)For any journey not directly associated with school business eg for meetings of the teacher’s own professional association.

Mileage Rates Payable

A flat rate per mile of 40 pence per mile.

The following exceptions shall apply and these can be claimed at the locally determined rate in lieu of NJC rates:

i)For teachers working in designated split site establishments for journeys at the agreed distance.

ii)For teachers in schools undertaking journeys to teach pupils or associated duties, eg secondary school link courses.

iii)For centrally employed peripatetic teachers duties associated with the teaching of pupils and management responsibilities pending a review in September 2004.

iv)Teachers redeployed at the instigation of the Authority as a result of school reorganisation or budget difficulties.

NBJourneys during weekends and school holidays and in respect of INSET and additional home to place of work outside of the normal working day will be payable at the agreed flat rate.

Mileometer readings must be recorded in all circumstances with the exception of 1) above where a pre-determined rate exists.
