Solutions / class:

Fill all test tubes with tap water except one.

Fill one test tube with a diluted strength sodium hydroxide mixture.

It should look the same as all other tubes in the rack(s)

The indicator is Phenolphthalein. I use it full strength as an indicator. Try to get the liquid solution. If you must mix it, use rubbing alcohol to mix the powder with.

Procedures.

You may need to have to “stir” the students in the room. Students may be reluctant to move around and will only go to their friends if they are not told actively to move around and find new people.

Make sure that the students mix the indicator into their test tube solutions. Many times the indicator will sit on the top of the water and not mix unless they mix it. Some will show purple only after mixing.

Showing any purple = infected. (An analogy is being kind of pregnant. You either are or you are not!)
