Course Description
In Probability and Statistics, students learn the fundamentals of these principals and apply them to real data. Students will work with data to perform statistical analyses and summarize the results; examine ways to organize and display data to draw conclusions about relationships; describe and summarize data numerically using central tendency, variation, and position statistics; describe and summarize data numerically using distributions; utilize statistical applications to solve problems from a wide range of categories; use continuing methods and probability formulas to evaluate the likelihood of events occurring; and apply probability and statistical tests as decision-making tools in hypothesis testing.
Instructional Policy
Probability and Statistics is a challenging course that includes extensive practice, hands-on activities, projects, labs, reading, and writing assignments. iPads, calculators, manipulative, and real-world applications are used to enhance instruction. Students work in teams and individually to complete assignments. High quality work is essential, and students are expected to re-do work until standards are mastered. A variety of assessments will be used throughout the year.
Topics/Units of the course
· Analyzing Data
· Producing Data
· Chance (Probability and Probability Models)
· Inference (Confidence intervals, significance test, Chi-Squared tests, populations)
Instructional Strategies
Instruction will differ depending on the unit and class period. I do many things in class. I will lecture, use the LCD projector, the dry erase boards, windows media player (Spotify), calculators, PowerPoint, SmartBoard, iPads…technology is a must. Class will be interesting and constantly changing…I may even stand on a desk or two. The success of this class depends on your cooperation and participation. Please come every day prepared, ready to work, and ready to contribute. Calculators will be used on a daily basis. You may rent a calculator from the school for $20.
Assessment Strategies
Major Assessments (Tests/Projects): 60%
Homework/Classwork (including daily grades): 15%
Minor Assessment (Toolkits, Quizzes, etc.): 25%
Reminders and deadlines will be assigned and discussed in class. All quizzes/tests will be announced, and the number of quizzes per instructional unit will be based on the length of that particular unit.
Homework Policy
Homework will be assigned every day and will be due at the beginning of the next class period for correctness and/or completeness. Work must be shown to receive credit! NO WORK = NO CREDIT.
When homework is assigned, we will always go over the work to make sure students understand what they missed. If the homework is graded for correctness, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and make corrections for full credit.
Make-up Policy
When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to get the make-up work from the teacher or the MyHomework app. The student has two days to turn in any homework or class work that was missed for full credit. If they missed a quiz or test, the student is responsible for taking that assessment the day they return to class (unless other arrangements are made). If the assignment(s) are not made up within these time periods, then it is considered late.
Late Work
Students are expected to turn in assignments complete, at the beginning of the class period that they are due. Students will be deducted 10 points per day for each day the assignment is late. However, assignments for a given unit will not be accepted after the completion of that unit and unit test.
Retake Policy
Any student who makes a 76 or lower on a major assessment will be given ONE opportunity to retake the assessment. The student will need to attend tutoring after school or with the teacher within two weeks of the original testing date, and the student must retake the test within two weeks of the original test date. A 77 is the highest grade that can be recorded for the retake.
Grading Scale
A 93-100
B 85-92
C 77-84
D 70-76
F 0-69
Classroom Procedures
· Bathroom policy: If the respected girl’s or boy’s bathroom pass is there, you may go to the restroom, but do not disrupt class and/or instruction to ask.
· If you need to sharpen your pencil, or get any supplies, do so at anytime using discretion, but do not disrupt class
· Do not get up to throw something away without permission. Permission will not be given during instruction; this can cause disruptions to the class
· There will be times for open discussion where you can answer without being called on, but be aware of the situation. Do not interrupt someone else while they are speaking, including me. Unless I specify for open answers, please raise your hand before you speak; it prevents from distractions.
· Rules:
o Be respectful, punctual, prepared, positive, polite, and do your best at all times!
o Cell phones must be turned off and put away at all times unless otherwise directed by teacher – If I see it, I will take it.
§ iPads will be used during throughout the year; however, when they are not being used, they must be put away so as not to cause a disturbance
Students – Respect
You will have my respect, not because you’re in my class, not because you’re part of this school, but because you exist. Even though I am your teacher and/or coach, I am also here to serve you. I am here to help you in any way, for the betterment of YOU. I hope to earn your respect and be someone that you remember for years to come. I have high expectations for you and want you to excel in this class, in school, and in life. You can do it, if you choose to do so, and I will be your biggest fan.
