The Universal Kingdom
The image of foreigners descending our shores from the north and the west is one which all Australians can relate to. In Isaiah’s time it is also likely that many foreigners arrived in Israel by boat-others across land (e.g. Tarshish in Spain; Put and Lud in Africa; Tubal near Russia). This must have been a disconcerting experience for the Israelites: now their God was everybody’s God; their land to be shared with foreigners, refugees and strangers. In time, these Gentile pagans would even become priests and authorities of the temple.
Jesus himself knew what it was to be treated as an outcast. Although an authentic Palestinian Jew of the house of David, he was more often treated as an ‘outsider’. And although a son of Israel, the author of Hebrews tells us “he learnt obedience through suffering” (5:8). This occurred because he challenged people’s prejudices about who is good, who is to be saved, and who will enter the kingdom of God.
Nor does Jesus answer the question of the bystander: “Lord, will only a few be saved?” (Lk. 13:22). Despite what Jesus says about narrow gates, locked doors and being left outside, the final image is one of a full banquet in which patriarchs and prophets are joined with peoples from the four corners of the earth. Isaiah spoke about peoples of every nation and language coming together to worship God in the temple of Jerusalem. Jesus speaks rather of the feast in the kingdom of heaven. Then we are presented with another of his radical sayings: “The last will be first; and the first will be last” (Lk 13:30). Pope Francis has been telling us something similar.
The Christian church is called to be a poor, serving, lowly church; a church of the poor and for the poor; a church which understands the struggles and reaches out to the lives of ordinary people; a church that is less concerned about enforcing rules and more concerned about communicating the love and mercy of a tender-hearted God; a church that doesn’t prejudge who is and who is not in God’s kingdom. Nor is the church to be only concerned with its own members. Who can forget Pope Francis washing the feet of young prisoners, including females and Muslims, in the Roman prison on Holy Thursday? This image of servant leadership, by one who is ‘first’ among us, reminds us of “the Son of Man who came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life for the ransom of many” (Mt 20:28). The other side of the equation is also clear in Jesus’ message to the people of his day. Too much power and wealth can be an impediment to the preaching of the Good News ourselves. Is not this the heart of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and Mary’s Magnificat song? Yes, we are all invited to the banquet, but only if we learn to wash the feet of the foreigner, refugee and stranger.

WELCOME BLANKETS FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS IN COMMUNITY DETENTION

Some members of our parish community are extending a welcome to asylum seekers who have been released into the community under the harsh no-advantage –policy. The first phase has involved a small gesture of concern by addressing the difficulty of keeping warm over this winter. We have made and distributed over 200 snuggle rugs so far. We are now planning the second phase in which we will extend an invitation to asylum seekers living in the Reservoir area to participate in the small sewing circles where an exchange of culture and talents can take place. We anticipate that meeting these people face-to-face will enable us to better appreciate their stories.

We are hoping to establish more sewing circles and welcome anyone who would like to be involved. There are many things to be done besides the actual sewing. We have a store of materials and some donated sewing machines from people who have upgraded to a newer model and are hoping to acquire more. We will need to replenish our materials so donations of suitable materials or money would be gratefully accepted.

The 99th World Day of Migrants and Refugees
Sunday 25th August 2013
Migrations: Pilgrimage of Faith and Hope
“I am thinking of the thousands upon thousands of people who, for various reasons choose to come to Australia to fulfil their faith and hope; much more, I am thinking of the most recent arrivals and those who more acutely live the phenomenon of forced migration and look for a place of welcome, peaceful living and dignified opportunities…
Australia has provided many opportunities for “people who have come across the sea” (National Anthem). From all countries people have come to Australia seeking to fulfil their hopes and strengthen their faith. Australia has been enriched by these people many of whom hail from countries torn by war, famine and sheer poverty. Today,
people keep on coming “across the seas”…
Hope is a major force of motivation driving refugees to endure and continue their journey. They look to us as people who can help fulfil their legitimate hopes. They have faith that Australia will offer a safe place and provide their family and children a decent opportunity to live a dignified life. In this Year of Faith, we pray that the hope and faith which migrants place in us will inspire our commitment to reach out and to create communities united in the communion of one faith and one hope.”
(excerpts from the message of Most Rev Gerard Hanna DD, Bishop of Wagga Wagga
Delegate for Migrants and Refuges Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life)

Father’s Day Appeal
for the Sick and Retired Priests of Melbourne.
The special collection for the Sick and Retired Priests of Melbourne will be held next weekend 31st August/1st September. Priests generally retire at 75 years according to Canon (Church) Law. 89 Melbourne priests are currently retired, they have ministered in most Melbourne Parishes. Out of these 89 retired priests, 4 are aged in their 90s, 41 retired priests are aged in their 80s, 23 are aged between 75-80, 18 between 66-75 and also 3 priests aged under 65 who have retired due to ill health. They are grateful for your support now and in the future. There are 13 priests over 75 and 65 priest aged 65-75 who are still working in Melbourne Parishes – they will soon need our support. Please give generously by using the special envelope which is among the set of the thanksgiving envelopes or the special envelopes which will be in church next weekend.
