COURSE DESCRIPTION

Honors Pre-calculus provides students an honors-level study of trigonometry, advanced functions, analytic geometry, and data analysis in preparation for calculus. Applications,modeling and technology will be included throughout the course of study for instruction and assessment.

Prerequisites: Math I, HN Math II, HN Math III

  • Analyze and describe phenomena as functions graphically, algebraically and verbally; identify independent and dependent quantities, domain, and range, input/output.
  • Translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations.
  • Define and use linear, quadratic, cubic, exponential, logarithmic, rational, absolute value, polar, parametric and radical functions, alone or as systems, to model and solve problems.
  • Use trigonometric ratios to model and solve problems.
  • Find limits of progressive series, if they exist.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS

  1. 3-ring binder or notebook(REQUIRED)
  2. Loose-leaf paper / Loose-leaf graph paper
  3. Writing utensil, preferably pencils, and highlighter
  4. TI 83/84 Graphing calculator (RECOMMENDED)

GRADING

Formal Assessments: 70% of quarter grade

Tests, Projects, Quizzes (1/3 of a test)

Informal Assessments: 30% of quarter grade

Classwork, homework, daily grades, etc.

Grading Scale:A: 90-100

B: 80-89D: 60-69

C: 70-79F: 0-59

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

  • Be Respectful to yourself, your peers, your teacher and your surroundings
  • Stay alert – no heads on desks.
  • No side conversations during instruction.
  • Be Prepared, Prompt and Responsible
  • Bring pencil, paper, your three-ring binder and any homework to class every day!
  • Be Positive 
  • Be Honest
  • Follow all school rules, particularly:
  • Dress appropriately, including NO HEADGEAR.
  • NO food or drinks in the classroom except water.
  • NO CELL PHONES, EARBUDS OR ELECTRONICS SHOULD BE OUT during the school day.
  • Additionally:
  • We stop class with about 5 minutes left in the period. It is EVERYONE’s job to make sure that ALL supplies, including calculators, chromebooks, and office supplies, are returned where they belong in the last 4-5 min of the period.
  • On each test date, all belongings (including electronics and phones) must be left at the front or back of the room until the test is over.

What you can expect from me…

  1. I will treat you with respect.
  2. I will come to class each day prepared to teach.
  3. I will start class promptly when the bell rings.
  4. I will be positive and will believe in you.
  5. You can expect me to enforce rules.
  6. I will return your quizzes and tests within 3 days, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
  7. I will give you a chance to retest on any test after school that you do not pass… retests must be taken within ten (10) class days of original test return, with a maximum retest grade of 79%.

  • MAKE-UP WORK:

For excused absences, students have five (5) days after they return to make up work missed.

Upon returning to school after an absence, students should…

  1. Turn in any homework assignments that were due the day that you missed.
  2. Check the class make-up work shelf to get any handouts you missed during your absence.
  3. If you missed a test/quiz, you must make it up within the five days,or the grade will be zero.

**If you miss ONLY a review day, you will be required to take the test with the rest of the class.

  • LATE WORK: Late work due to absence will be accepted at full credit for five school days. Late work not due to absence will be accepted up to five school days later with a 10% daily reduction; then a zero.
  • CHEATING: Receiving or giving any unauthorized assistance on any part of an assignment will result in academic and disciplinary consequences, up to out of school suspension. At a minimum, zero credit on the assignment and official documentation of the unethical behavior will result.

The following schedule is for after-school help, reinforcement, test retakes, or recovery.

Remember that you must not miss more than ten days, or you will require recovery!

DISCIPLINE POLICY

The majority of discipline issues have the following sequence of consequences:

1st offense / Warning/student-teacher meeting
2nd& 3rdoffense / Warning and/or parent contact and/or possible ASD
4th offense / Office referral

MONITORING GRADES

Grades will be updated regularly and progress reports will be distributed according to the CMS academic calendar. Parents are encouraged to check online for grades, using PowerSchool. Set up an account at cms.powerschool.com, or contact the RRHS guidance office at 980.344.0409.
