Welcome!

I am Mr. Homic. I graduated from Michigan State University in 1992, with a major in Physical Science and minor in Mathematics. I earned my Masters Degree in Administration from Saginaw Valley State University in 1998.

This is my 22nd consecutive year in 7th Grade at Kennedy! Not to worry, those years were spent teaching, not as a student. Aside from Math, I have also taught Science. Outside of the classroom, I have coached both football and basketball at Kennedy and also have coached travel baseball.

Personally, I have been married to my wife Melissa for nineteen years. We have two kids. Our son Cooper is 16 years old. Cooper is a junior at Cousino HS and attends the Macomb Math Science Technology Center, MMSTC. He is into fishing, golf, basketball, and baseball. Our daughter Kendall is 14 years old and every bit as much fun as Coop. She is a freshman at Cousino HS, and also was selected to attend MMSTC. Kendall is also an athlete. She plays softball and basketball, and volleyball. When time allows, I enjoy going to HS sporting events, watching as many MSU/Detroit Tigers games as possible, and golfing.

ZAP: Zero’s Aren’t Permitted

Zeros Aren’t Permitted (ZAP) is a school program in which students are not allowed to have missing work or turn in assignments that would earn a zero. The philosophy behind ZAP is simple – multiple zeros make it difficult for a student to pass the class, and therefore encourages students who have a number of zeros to stop trying period. In addition, ZAP prepares students for life beyond their K-12 education; if one wants to keep their job, not completing projects, or completing them poorly simply is not an option. ZAP is not intended to be a “gotcha” punishment, but rather a measure to ensure that time is provided for all students to turn in all of their assignments. Your teachers don’t want you to get ZAPPED. We want you to do your work. Students will always have the opportunity to complete the work prior to any consequence. Points may be deducted from any late/ZAP assignments.

Math Department Level Grading Policies

These are in effect for all grades

A student’s grade is calculated as a weighted average

Weekly Progress / Weekly check-ups measuring accuracy and math progress of current math standard; projects; constructed responses; performance tasks; computer-based evaluations / 30%
Assessment / Assessment measuring multiple skills or standards at once; Unit tests/post tests / 40%

Math Practice Rubric

What it looks like / How much is earned

Student attempts majority of the assignment to the best of his/her ability and shows work / 3 points
Student only completes half of the assignment / 2 points
Student attempts or completes less than half of the assignment / 1 point
