Teacher – Marking assignment submissions and providing feedback

The assignment activity in Moodle allows for the collection of electronically submitted documents. Once students upload their files, the person grading the material canmark and annotate the assignments with feedback online or download the files for offline marking. Feedback can take the form of files as well as simple text. A grade or scale can also be applied if desired.

Grading submissions

By using the grading area of an assignment you can conveniently upload files for students and provide feedback and grades/results.Note: The ability to provide feedback and files is controlled by the settings for each individual assignment.

  1. Click on the assignment in your Moodle course.

  1. Click View all submissionsto view a list of all submissions or click on Gradeto launch the marking (grading) widow for the first assignment in the list.
  1. If you clicked on Grade, the first student file submission on the list will be displayed.
  2. Moodle has converted the file to PDF format so that you can annotate it with comments and highlights.
  3. If the student has not yet submitted, the assignment area will be blank. To view only students who have submitted assignments, click on the Filter icon below the user list at the top right.
  4. If desired, in the right panel, downloadthe student file orenter a grade and your overall feedback comments.
  5. Use the toolbar at the top left to annotate the student file, highlight sections and add comments and stamps.

  1. Click on Save Changes when you are finished marking.
  2. Move to the next student by clicking on the right arrows at the top left or choose a specific student by selectingfrom the drop-down menu at the top right.
  1. Navigate back to the Assignment page or the Course page by clicking on the links at the top left.

Note: Grade, Comments and Files along with number of attempts are dependent on the assignment settings. It is possible to reconfigure these settings if needed.

Download submissions

You can download all the submissions as one convenient zip file from the assignment Settings block. All files will be named by the student name and the zip file name contains the assignment title and completion date for easy identification.

  1. Click on the assignment in your Moodle course.
  2. Go to the Assignment Administration via the cog icon drop down menu, then
    Click Download all submissions.
    This will download all the submissions in a zip file.
  1. Go to the download then double click on the downloaded .zip file to view the assignment files.
