MONDAY / Lesson Title: “Through the Tunnel” / Standards: SL.7.1, RL.7.2Objectives:

- Introduce—The Three Levels of Reading
- Working in small groups, students write a brief summary of “Through the Tunnel.” Using the summary as a guide, students should then find what they think is a significant word that connects to the theme of the text.
- Each group shares their significant word with the whole class. Create a list of significant words.
- Divide the text into parts and assign each group a section to reread, searching for additional words that are significant to the story and relate to the theme of the text. Direct students to pay attention to words that are repeated, as well as focusing on abstract nouns.
- Once more, come together as a whole class and share significant words. Students must be able to explain the significance of their word. Add agreed upon words to the class list.
