a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights).

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence
Assessment Instrument
(Ex. Test, Poster, Presentation, Picture, etc.) / Students through their completion of four facts about Sequoyah’s biography will show their understanding and knowledge about Sequoyah and his contributions to history and understanding of the Cherokee alphabet.
Evaluation (Grading) Instrument
(Ex. Point System, Rubric, Checklist, etc.) / - Students will be evaluated upon their completion of having four biography facts, and Cherokee conversation flip book and upon completion of these things will show their understanding and gained knowledge of Sequoyah and his contributions to history
Stage 3 Learning Plans
Materials / -Each student should have second grade Georgia history book
-Power point with Cherokee Alphabet and individual print outs for each student
-Sequoyah “ Cherokee Flip book page”
-Sequoyah mini biography books
-Some books about Sequoyah ( age appropriate) just for students to look at

*Significant Actions to Introduce and Guide Lesson / - Teacher will introduce lesson by asking does anyone know who knows where the name for the Sequoyah tree originated from.
- Teacher will then tell students that Sequoyah was the man who invented the Cherokee alphabet which took him twelve years to do
- Teacher will then have all students read the brief description of Sequoyah from the social studies text book
- Teacher will then have students read the biography book on Sequoyah in a group read aloud and write down four facts they learned
- Teacher will let students, work on Cherokee Flip book activity

* Explain How Students Discuss or Present Results of What They Did During the Lesson / - Students will participate in introductory discussion on Sequoyah
- Students will participate in biography read aloud on Sequoyah and are to write down four facts they learned and will also complete a Cherokee Flip book activity on Sequoyah
- Students must have complete sentences for the four Sequoyah fact sentences
- Students will turn in biography facts into teachers basket, they will take home name activity
Teacher’s Lesson Closure/Wrap-Up/Transition / -Teacher will wrap up lesson by asking students what are some things they learned and remember about Sequoyah.
-Teacher will ask students what was Sequoyahs’ contribution to history
Adaptations for Exceptional Students (Anyone who requires modifications for their needs) / - Students that need adaptations will be able to have teacher work one on one with them or be able to collaborate with other students
- Students who have difficulty writing will be able to have an opportunity to orally communicate the four facts they learned to the teacher “ only in extreme circumstances”
- Students that need extra time to complete assignment will be able to work on it during silent reading
