Power Standard 1A Pre-Assessment

PS1A: Students will understand multiplication and division of whole numbers.

Power Standards Assessments may be given anytime during the quarter. The actual schedule should be decided on by the grade level team to facilitate data team work.

·  Follow the directions carefully for each question.

·  You should have plenty of time to finish every question on the test. If you do not know the answer to a question, go on to the next question. You can come back to that question later.

·  If you finish early, go back and review your answers.

·  You may not use a calculator.

Question 12: (groups)

2 points: The student shows understanding of solving a word problem involving division by doing the following:

·  Understands: uses 24 and factors of 24

·  Procedures: shows a procedure that involves multiplication or division to determine ways to group

·  Answer: writes 3 of the following: 28 groups of 1, 2 groups of 14, 12 groups of 2, 3 groups of 8, or 8 groups of 3.

1 point: The student does one of the following:

·  Understands: uses 24 and factors of 24 and a procedure that involves division or repeated subtraction to determine ways to group

·  Answer: writes 3 of the following: 28 groups of 1, 2 groups of 14, 12 groups of 2, 3 groups of 8, or 8 groups of 3.

0 points: The student shows very little or no understanding of solving a word problem involving division.

Question 13: (pencils)

2 points: The student shows understanding of solving a word problem involving division by doing the following:

·  Understands: uses 62 pencils and 8 pencils per box

·  Procedures: shows a procedure that involves division or repeated subtraction to determine the number of boxes

·  Answer: writes 7 boxes with 6 leftover or 8 boxes (using an additional box for the leftovers)

1 point: The student does one of the following:

·  Understands: uses 62 pencils and 8 pencils per box and shows a strategy that involves using division or repeated subtraction to determine the number of boxes

·  Answer: writes 7 boxes with 6 leftover or 8 boxes (using an additional box for the leftovers)

0 points: The student shows very little or no understanding of a word problem involving division.
