TCCU INCREASES ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO $1000 EACH;

INVITES STUDENTS TO REGISTERBY OCTOBER 14TH

TAYLORVILLE, IL – Now in its third year, Taylorville Community Credit Union’s annual “Stop. SHOP. VOTE!” Scholarship Program has increased its funding to $1000 for each of six awards. According to Will Perkins, TCCU President, the credit union’s Board of Directors approved the increase at their August monthly meeting.

“Everyone has seen the continuing increase in education costs, making it more and more difficult for many students to continue their education after high school,” Perkins points out. “We as a community-based credit union recognize the need to help our local students succeed, and to attain their dreams. These $1000 financial awards will help six of our students along their path to success.”

Perkins explains that registration to be eligible for one of the awards is simple: senior students at Taylorville, Litchfield and Hillsboro High Schools simply need to provide the credit union with their name, a good quality photo (class photo is ideal), and a signed parental permission slip (available online at and in each of TCCU’s three offices.

“Registration is open to all students who plan to continue their education following graduation from high school,” Perkins says. “However, they must register by end-of-day Friday, October 14th. “Students can stop by their local TCCU branch office or go online. “

A total of six (6) $1000 awards will be presented; two each to the three high schools. The TCCU Scholarship winners aredetermined by votes cast in the students’ local communities. “Credit unions have always emphasized the ‘People Helping People’ philosophy,” Perkins points out, “and our scholarship program reinforces that.”

Tri-county residents can cast votes for their preferred student(s) whenever they shop at participating retailers in Taylorville, Hillsboro and Litchfield. “For every $10 they spend at a participating business, shoppers can cast one vote for a student. Spend $100 at a participating business, you can cast 10 votes,” Perkins says. There is a limit of 100 votes ($1000 purchase) per any individual purchase.

Participating businesses in their respective communities will display a poster of registered students’ photos. TCCU will provide businesses the necessary posters to display, as well as the ballots and ballot boxes.

Student registration is open from now through Friday, October 14. The scholarship promotion / voting period will run from November 9, 2016 through February 28, 2017. “We purposely selected that timeframe because it book-ends the holiday season,” Perkins points out. “We designed this program to benefit everyone: our students, because they receive $1000 in support of education expenses; our locally-owned small businesses, because this program will help drive more foot traffic into their stores and generate increased sales; and our communities, based on the increased sales tax revenues and a strengthened sense of ‘community’ as we keep our dollars in the greater tri-county area. We may think globally, but we need to shop and invest locally.”

Scholarships will be awarded at the end of the school year in May, 2017.
