TCA Summer Reading List

TCA Summer Reading for 1st grade

Attached you will find a reading log for this summer. For this log, your child may read any book that they would like. You and your child will select their own reading goal for the log and meet that goal daily. For each day that you read, you will fill it in on the log and record the name of the book. The log is intended to keep your child reading throughout the summer and will be collected for 5 bonus points.

In addition to the log, below you will find the required book for your child’s grade

level. This book may be ordered online or checked out at your local library.

The Carrot Seed

Your assignment is to read The Carrot Seed with your child and discuss the faith

of the little boy. Draw or write about another story of great faith. It can be a story

from the Bible or a personal experience. More assignment details and the page to

write about your experience are attached.

Complete logs and projects are due on the first day of school.

After reading the book, your child will need to complete one of the following:

Book Report- The student will write a 3 paragraph paper about details from

the story that they read.

Poster Presentation- The student will make a poster displaying what they read.

Shadow Box/Model- The student will make a shoe box or shadow box

model using details to present the story.

Complete logs and projects are due Thursday, August 7, 2017. All projects will be

presented during the first week of school for a test grade. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

Summer Reading Project

Students in grades 4th- 8th are responsible for reading TWO books and completing one of the following projects for EACH of the books you read this summer. You must choose a different project for EACH book. If you exceed the minimum of two books and projects, you may duplicate a project. All projects are due August 25, 2017.

Upon returning to school, the students will be able to take the A.R. test for their summer reading book. These points will count towards their A.R. goal for the first nine weeks.

Design a timeline for events in the book.
Must include:
-the book’s title and author -information about the events in the plot from the beginning, middle, and the conclusion (minimum of 12 events)
- the main and minor characters in the events
- Neatness, color, and creativity. / Create a wanted poster for the antagonist (character that causes problem(s) in the story.
Must include:
- the book’s title and author
-a drawing of the antagonist
- what he/she has done to cause problem(s) in the story -the setting where the antagonist was last seen in the book
-a description of his/her overall appearance
-some quotes from the text of what other characters have said about him/her
-finally a “reward” amount. Be creative. / Write a letter to the author of the book telling him/her what you thought about the book.
Must include:
-the book’s title and author
-a minimum of 3 paragraphs
- your opinion of the book
-2 pieces of text from the book to support your opinion
- Typed or neatly written in blue or black ink will be acceptable.
Create a crossword puzzle from information in your book.
Must include:
-the book’s title and author -character names • setting, location
-adjectives to describe the setting
-other interesting facts about story. There are websites that can help you make a crossword puzzle. / Design a comic strip retelling an event from the book.
Must include:
book’s title and author
-minimum of 10 cartoon squares
- main characters
-other important minor characters
-setting at time of event
-cartoon speech bubbles that summarize the speech of characters
-clear, colorful images the depict visually the action of the event / Summarize the book in poem form with rhyme (minimum of 20 lines).
Must include:
- book’s title and main character
-antagonist (character that causes problem)
-setting
-problem in the story
-basic outline of story Should be typed or neatly written in blue or black ink.
Research and write a report (minimum of 5 paragraphs) on the author in your own words.
Must include:
- book’s title and author
- basic background information such as: 1. birthdate
2. how he/she became author
3. early employment information 4. other books by this author
5. brief description of the book you read by this author Should be typed or written neatly in blue or black pen. / Prepare a PowerPoint presentation or a poster summarizing your book.
Must include:
-the book’s title and author
-a summary of the main events in the plot of the story from the beginning, the middle, and the conclusion (minimum of 12 events)
-information about the main and minor characters (what they look like and act like)
-the setting of the book
-your opinion of the book / Create a skit and puppets for your book.
- Write a script for a scene in your book
-Construct puppets of the characters in your script
-Label your script with:
1. the book’s title and author
2. page numbers for the scene for which you wrote the script

******Students in grades 9th -12th should be prepared to take a test on the material covered in the summer reading book. We encourage the students to take detailed notes as they read and even write short summaries that can be used to review before taking the test. *********
