Welcome to ward 6

Ward 6 is an extremely busy medical ward. Our specialities are female medicine for the elderly and you can expect to see a variety of medical conditions.

We admit our patients from a variety of sources:-

·  Ward 15 (Medical Admissions Ward)

·  Medical High Dependency Unit

·  Transfers from other hospitals

·  Out patient Clinics

·  Transfers from other specialities within the hospital

In our ward the staff are divided into two teams. For your placement you will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor within one of the teams. You will assist in delivering a high standard of individualised nursing care for the named patients within your allocated team.

This orientation pack is designed to assist you in gaining as much as possible from your placement in ward 6.

On your first day you will be orientated to the ward layout and the organisation of the daily routine.

After initial orientation to the ward both yourself and your mentors have a responsibility to set objectives and ensure learning outcomes are met. You should work shift patterns to allow maximum contact with your mentors. A minimum of 40% of your placement should be spent working alongside your mentor/associate mentor.

During your placement with us, there will be opportunities to observe tests and nursing procedures specific to our specialities.

You can also negotiate with your mentor to arrange visits to affiliated departments, or, to have time shadowing the Specialist Nurses who work closely with our patients.

These could include:-

●Social workers

●Psychiatric Liaison nurse

●Diabetic Liaison Nurse

●Physiotherapy

●Occupational Therapy

●Endoscopy

●IRT (Immediate response team for fife)

●ESDS (Early supportive discharge scheme)

To support students “learning in practice” teaching sessions will be held if able, throughout your placement. These are as follows:-

●SEWS

●Hand Hygiene

●Pressure area care

●MUST

●Falls Risk Assessment

●Wound care

●Catheter Care

●Drug Administration

●Urinalysis

●CPR

● New Documentation

These will be carried out either by your mentor/s CN or SCN of the ward.

In Ward 6 we value our student nurses and we strive to provide our commitments to you. i.e.

A friendly learning environment

Planned provision of a mentor and associate

Orientation

Assistance in setting realistic/achievable objectives

Education

Appropriate feedback

Opportunity to voice your opinion

A brief discussion will be held at the beginning of your placement with CN Karen Lovett (student co-ordinator). This will outline what is expected from students depending on there level/year of training i.e 1st, 2nd or 3rd year.

It is important to meet with your allocated mentors, for discussion and documentation of progress at midway and end of placement.

At the end of each shift students are given the opportunity to take time to fill in their “skills booklet” and document what skills they have experienced and learned that day. By doing this, students can demonstrate that they have an understanding of intervention/skill carried out and allows mentors to identify skills what further development may be required.

If you have any queries or are unsure of anything, please feel free to approach any senior member of staff.

If any issues are also worrying you please speak to CN Karen Lovett

We also have introduced a weekly review sheet for yourself which is aimed to enable you to raise any concerns or issues with your mentor at an early stage of your placement so that they may be addressed quickly.

We hope you enjoy working as part of the team in ward 6.
