Reuse for the Veterans Hospital Building/Site

I’ve received some inquiries about the reuse of the Veteran’s Hospital building and site (VA) on Zorn Avenue. As a result I contacted Congressman Yarmuth’s office and they have received information from the VA that I’d like to share. It is too early to determine reuse for building. After an initial feasibility study has been conducted, the VA Secretary will have the final say so after receiving recommendations for building. If the VA decides not to reuse the facility, the General Services Administration (GSA) will gain management of the property and have option to reuse for the federal government’s use. If GSA passes on reuse, then state government will be given the option to acquire. If they pass, then local government will be given the option. If all levels of government pass on the acquisition of the property, GSA can then choose to sell it on the open market.I will continue to share information on the project as it becomes available.

Fischer will present the award 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 during the “Keepers of the Dream” community arts celebration dedicated to Dr. King at the Kentucky Center’s Whitney Hall, 501 W. Update on the Plume Headed Down the Ohio

I received the following update from the Louisville Water Company (LWC) regarding the chemical spill in West Virginia. The spill is making its way down the Ohio River. The current travel time for the plume to hit the Louisville area is tonight (Thursday). On Tuesday the LWCWater Quality Analyst, Nicole Estes, traveled to Cincinnati to work with the Cincinnati Water Works. Nicole brought a sample of the compound back to Louisville Water so their lab can start their analysis and treatment strategy. It does have a licorice odor. This is not a health concern for LWC customers. This is a taste and odor issue for Louisville Water. As in any taste and odor episode, Louisville Water has a taste and odor panel set up and those individuals are working diligently to make sure that the carbon is effective. LWC customers should not notice a difference in the water. For more information click here.

Louisville Selected to Participate in 2014 Leadership STAR Community Program

With the goal of becoming nationally certified as a sustainable community, Louisville has been selected to be mentored through the non-profit, Sustainability Tools for Assessing & Rating (STAR) Communities, Mayor Greg Fischer announced today. Louisville is one of 19 cities to be given the honor. The city’s Office of Sustainability is partnering with the Louisville Sustainability Council, which will play a vital role in the STAR data collection and management process. Communities with certification receive national recognition and are seen as leaders in city sustainability. Sustain Louisville, the city’s environmental plan, identified STAR as the primary benchmarking tool that would provide a new way to measure Louisville’s sustainability strengths and needs. STAR will help collect information that will provide the basis for 44 sustainability metrics, such as green market development, community water systems, and indoor air quality. STAR is the nation’s first standardized framework for evaluating the sustainability of cities. Its comprehensive set of local environmental, economic and social metrics was developed by more than 200 technical experts in order to drive competition and continuous improvement in city sustainability results and practices. Louisville received a $10,125 scholarship, and Louisville Sustainability Council is contributing $1,875 for the city to participate in the program.

Get Cash for College: File, Follow and Facebook

January is the time for high school students and adults headed to college to cash in on financial aid opportunities. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are available to help current and prospective students earn their degrees. And now is the time to file for those federal and state financial aid dollars. Pace Car Program Available in the 9th District!

The Pace Car Program is a citizen-based traffic calming initiative that encourages residents to take responsibility for their own driving while setting the "pace" for safer streets and neighborhoods. Residents will be able to sign an official Pace Car registration form and pledge the following:

“Drive the speed limit on city streets, especially in residential areas, setting the pace for vehicles behind me; stop completely at STOP signs and don’t run red lights; be courteous to all bicyclists; pedestrians and other motorists; give myself enough travel time so that I am not sacrificing safety or courtesy; devote my full attention to driving by avoiding distractions, i.e.: cell phones; not be pressured by the impatience of other drivers to exceed the speed limit; keep my sense of humor, life’s too short to let driving stress my out!; and display the Metro Pace Car Program decals or bumper stickers.”

By signing this pledge you will receive an official Pace Car bumper sticker or car window sticker to display on your vehicle. The sticker will alert other drivers that they are taking part in the citizen-based effort to address the problems of traffic speed and safety.

To sign up for this program please click here to download the Official Pledge Form. Read, sign and date the form and return it to our office. Please indicate if you would prefer a bumper or window sticker for the program.
