BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
Jan Dalton expressed her feelings about the letter published in the newsletter regarding the perceived lack of friendliness of Guild members at Christmas lunch and thought it was an unfair reflection on members’ attitudes to visitors. It was commented that such a negative letter need not have been published and reference to its receipt would have been sufficient as members are open and friendly. However, it was explained that letters sent to the Editor should be published whether they are flattering or not and it was decided that an open apology would be put in the next newsletter.
Advertising for Expertise Events – advice was sought for cost for commercial advertising and forwarded to Expertise Events who chose not to respond.

REPORTS
President(Margaret Treloar)
Quilting Day at Government House is almost upon us and today is the very last chance to lodge your registration form. Because of security rules at Government House, if your name is not on the list submitted after this meeting you will not be able to attend. We have had a good response so far and look forward to a great day. All members who have registered will receive an email or a phone call giving details of times, what to bring, etc. over the next week or so.
Yvette and I attended the QuiltAustralia conference in Sydney last month. It was quite successful and one of the most important decisions was, that in future the conference will only be held every second year. This is to save on costs which have been mounting over the past few years. Queensland put forward a proposal that an in person conference be replaced with a tele –conference but this was not greeted with much enthusiasm. At least by holding the conference only every second year, cost would be reduced substantially. The usual annual reports will still be submitted by each Guild and circulated so all guilds so they can remain in touch. The valuation seminar was also successful and hopefully there will be some steps forward with regard to national valuation standards.
Another group which was set up was a national Workshop Co-ordinators’ group, but as Tasmania does not currently have Workshop Co-ordinator, we are not yet part of this group. I have been participating in group emails in the hope that we will find someone to take on this role. Working as part of a group should make it more exciting and interesting and make bringing well-known tutors to Tasmania much more achievable. If anyone is interested in becoming Workshop Co-ordinator, please let us know.
Members of my local quilting group recently attended the Devonport Friendship Day, and by all reports, it was a fantastic day.. Everyone had a great time. I would very much like to have gone along, but was in Newcastle for my granddaughter’s wedding. Sadly, I was also there for the funeral of a young member of our family – she was only forty and her sudden death left behind three children.
This has made me think long and hard about what we should be doing with our lives. This is not a dress rehearsal, we only get one chance at life and we should be grateful for every day that we are given and make the absolute most of those days. Really, how important are the petty squabbles and dramas that we get so excited about? Sorry, I don’t mean to be morbid, but the past few weeks has definitely made me question how I want to be remembered by my family.
Our speakers today are from Care Quilts and we also have some examples of English Paper Piecing to share with anyone interested.
This has become popular again, or maybe it didn’t lose its popularity in the first place.
Don’t forget that the Quilters’ Easter Showcase is on again next month – it should be a great day but I do question their statement in advertising it as “the best event on the Tasmanian quilting calendar.” We shall see what September brings!

We have had no new members this quarter but as it is almost the end of the financial year this is to be expected. It is almost time to renew our memberships. Fees are due by the 30th June, to keep you current. Remember cash can be paid to our Treasurer Susan, at meetings, cheques can be sent anytime to Tasmanian Quilting Guild address, or you can use the Direct Deposit Account remembering to give your member number as a reference. If you have forgotten your member number have any change of address or email details please be sure to let me know or pass them on with your renewal paperwork. Forms are available on our website or in the newsletter.
Vice President’s Challenge - topic advertised in the last Newsletter… Triangles. The only restriction is size; the longest side must be less than 30 inches, OR 75cm. It can be any technique, patchwork, applique. Try something new and have it ready for display and judging at our Christmas meeting.
Attention was drawn to the English Paper Piecing table in the centre of the room and members encouraged to visit it during the day to see different techniques for this style of patchwork. Thank you to Sharon Thomson for coming to demonstrate her work. Some history of EPP was outlined, the, earliest recorded in 1700’s.
Lastly, I am a fan of a list; without lists I wouldn’t function. So on the tables I have placed a couple of copies of a list I have made to help me get quilts finished in time for the exhibition this year. I started back in October and made some decisions on what I was going to finish. My list is filled in and hanging up by my sewing machine. Feel free to take the list, copy it, change it, or add what you need to make it helpful to you.

A request was made for someone to take on the role Workshops Coordinator. It was suggested that Chris Hussey, who is an experiencedcoordinator, be approached.

Newsletter/ Website
Due to the considerable increase in costs of printing and postage for the newsletter, members were asked to consider emailed copies. A form was made available for members to change their options for receipt of newsletters.
A number of suggestions were made to help alleviate these costs, such as black and white copies, distribution at meetings and checking to see if an e-copy would be acceptable to archives.
Expo/Island Quilts 2017 (Judi Spurr)
The Exhibition Committee met 5thMarch. It was a very long meeting covering many components of the up-coming Quilt Expo in Launceston.
An important change to the event is the closing date for all entries, including juniors – 30th June. Late entries will not be accepted. Due to the tremendous amount of work needing to be done by the volunteers, who also work and have family commitments,nine weeks is being allowed to get everything completed. Entered quilts do not have to be finished but a photo is required showing design, colours used and the final measurements. This is essential for allocation of categories.
Junior Textiles will be K – 12 and the same conditions will apply to them as to all exhibitors, but they can enter any sewn article.
The category Allocation Committee will meet on July 22nd, allowing three weeks for postal entries to arrive and be processed. This year entries can also be emailed to
Once categories have been allocated, the Data Entry Co-ordinator will start working on preparing the information. This will take considerable time and once completed, the Data Out Co-ordinator can start getting information ready for Judges, the catalogues and the Makers’ Statements which will include techniques used. These will be attached to the quilts this year. As preparation for these is time consuming, you are asked to keep statements brief and informative.
Category information will then be sent to the Volunteer Co-ordinator who will match this with the entrant’s volunteer information. This will either be emailed where applicable or postedby 5th August.
Information to Depots also needs to go out about this time and the bags delivered.
We have worked on the time line for this year and it may still need some adjustments, especially to the venues for Photography, Judging and Evening with the Judges, depending on the receipt of the grant by the Guild.
There will be three car parks available close by with low daily parking costs - $3 - $6 and free after noon on Saturday. Maps were made available.
There will be a new category this year – Novelty Quilt. Size to be cot size - 110cm x 130 cm. It can be Disney, Nursery Rhymes, Animals, etc.
Collaborative, Commercially Quilted and Group Quilts were defined.
Volunteers (Chris Coulbeck-McMurray)
Juniors will be encouraged to volunteer and will be assisted by members.
All exhibiting members are asked to volunteer to ensure quilts are well protected.
Everyone at the meeting was challenged to enter at least one quilt. Forms will be available at the June meeting.
Jenny Croxton encouraged every group to enter a quilt or sponsor one group member. Andrea asked if this could be extended to 2 members. This will be discussed at a future IQ meeting.
A Sponsorship Co-ordinator is required.
Next year’s raffle was called for.
2017 Raffle Quilt was revealed. “Lepidoptera” designed by Elizabeth Hartman, made by Modern Quilters Guild and quilted by Kat Jones.
AREA REPORTS
NORTH(Deb Groves)
Deb thanked all who provided morning tea.
Break O’DayStitchers
As part of 10 Days on the Island, Lucia Usmiani has an installation of articles from her mother’s Golden Hands book. Local artists are supporting this venture, ten of whom are in the Break O Day Stitchers, and include three TQG members. The work includes quilts, knitting, embroidery, weaving, silk painting and eco dyed articles. The exhibition is on until 26th March at Gallery Parnella at St Helens.
Lilydale Moderns
The Lilydale Moderns look out over a beautiful bush setting as they sew and chat. Recently they left this peaceful atmosphere to go on a fabric-shopping spree in the North West.
They are also planning a Round Robin and there has been lots of discussion on the rules!
Two members have booked into the retreat at White Sands.
The group hopes to meet other groups in their area and visit more fabric shops.
Launceston Patchworkers and Quilters
Members celebrated Helen Cohen’s 80th birthday with a shared luncheon and the presentation of a quilt made by members.
Sisters Joy and Kay ran a very successful Trade Table for Relay for Life on 23rd February and raised $640. All this money will stay in Launceston.
The President has announced her challenge for the year – a scrap quilt of any sizewhich must only include fabric from our stash – or someone else’s stash. The quilt must include fabric with dots, stripes, animals, florals and writing. There has been plenty of discussion about this challenge.
Wilted Quilters George Town
Members are meeting fortnightly again during daylight savings hours but will go back to monthly meetings for the winter months.
They will be contributing items to the community’s Biggest Morning Tea in May.
SOUTH(Jenny Croxton)
There is one event to publicise – on 8th April, the day after the Government House visit the Quilters’ Easter Showcase will be held at the Brighton Community Centre. All Tasmanian quilters are invited to come and enjoy a day of socialising, shopping, show and tell, demonstrations, a guest speaker and a pick-a-box prize draw.
There will be 14 shops present from around Tasmania, including 6 who are new to QES. The challenge theme is “The Year of the Rooster” and entries must be A3 size. Entryis $5. Bring a plate to share for morning tea, your mug and show and tell.
NORTH WEST (Janine Richardson)
The Devonport Friendship day was a great day and very successful.
Smithton will be holding their Friendship day on 22nd July
SUB COMMITTEES
Tasmanian Art Quilt Prize (Barbara Mellor)
The Committee held its first meeting for the year and decided on the theme “Ebb and Flow.” We are very excited about this, especially with the new category of Textile Sculpture.
Pip and Barbara met with the curator of the Maritime Museum and they are looking forward to having the exhibition in the Carnegie Gallery. The gallery has just been renovated and a new lighting system has been installed. There is no fee to hire the gallery.
A flyer has been produced, and has been distributed to other Quilting Guilds and patchwork shops around Australia. Quilters’ Companion and Textile FibreForum will be advertising during the year. The entry forms and terms and conditions are on the website or contact Barbara if a hard copy is required.
Judges are Eileen Campbell (Victoria), Mryrna McHugh (local) and the curator of the Maritime museum. The next meeting will be after Island Quilts.
TRADERS
Traders were introduced. It is good to see new traders: Lillian Atkinson - Esme’s ,LeesaGreenacre - Threads by the Sea, Deb Vince - Tasmanian Cottage Industries, Pam Jarman and Sue Domeney.
Sue has now closed Flowerpot Quilts but an ice dyeing workshop will be held on Sunday, after Government House visit and QES.
GENERAL BUSINESS
NSW Challenge Quilts (Lorraine Wootton)
Lorraine asked if the Guild would be prepared to take on the co-ordination of the travelling exhibition of the NSW Challenge Quilts. Tasmania Regional Arts, who had done this previously, is no longer able to do so. It would be a shame to lose such high quality work from the state. Cost would be minimal, probably about $55 each year to return to NSW but groups who used the quilts would be responsible for their own collection within the state. No insurance costs will be involved.
This will be discussed at the Committee of Management meeting.

Phoenix Centre
Jenny outlined a therapeutic project that is being planned by a counsellor with the Migrant Resource Centre to help traumatised and isolated refugee women assimilate into their new community through the making of a quilt. It is hoped that, working in a relaxed atmosphere, they will practise their English and develop new skills whilst creating an art quilt . It is hoped that they may also decide to join a quilt group.
