Harcourt Trophies Theme 1

Task 3: Prefixes, Suffixes & Root Words

Story: Darnell Rock Reporting

Content Standards:

  • Apply word analysis and vocabulary skills to comprehend selections.
  • Apply reading strategies to improve understanding and fluency.
  • Construct word bank of words with prefixes and suffixes.

Task:When reading the story, Darnell Rock Reporting, create a chart to help you identify 5 words and their page number within the story that have prefixes and/or suffixes. Be sure to include the root word for each of the words. Also, some words may not have both a prefix and suffix. Remember that you must turn in a neat and organized chart. A sample chart is shown for you below.

After you have completed your chart and have received your grade from me, meet with a partner and look over the words that are on their chart. Have they correctly identified prefixes, suffixes and root words? If not, help your partner fix their chart. Then, add some of their words to your chart to form a “Word Bank” of words with prefixes and suffixes. You should have 10 words total after meeting with your partner. If you and your partner have the same words, you may look back into the story to find more words. We will use this “Word Bank” for a later activity.
