Youth Offending Service Substance Misuse Worker

Purpose: / The tier 2 Substance Misuse Workers based with Cwm Taf Youth Offending Service work with young people (10-17) who use/misuse substances.
The aim of this service is to educate young people regarding their use and support them to reduce and/or stop their use.
The overarching aim is to prevent young people from offending and re-offending, as defined by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.
Accountable to: / TEDS Manager
Day to Day Management: / Operational Manager within the Youth Offending Service
Salary: / Starting at £20,500
Contract: / Ongoing, subject to continued funding and regular reviews
Base: / Based at the Youth Offending Service, Unit 2, Fairway Court, Treforest Industrial Estate, Treforest, Pontypridd, but, work will be required throughout Cwm Taf.
Hours of Work: / 37½ hours per week – flexible. Work may be required outside office hours for which time in lieu policy operates.
Annual Leave: / 30 days per year plus Bank Holidays increasing to 35 days after 5 years continuous employment.
Travel: / Own transport and current driving licence essential. Travel expenses will be paid for travel away from base (currently 45p per mile).
Security: / This post is exempt under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To work effectively as part of a multi agency team to manage risks presented by the young person.
  • To undertake assessments with regard to young people who are identified through the screening process as requiring a substance misuse service.
  • To undertake interventions in community, and/or custodial settings, as required.
  • To provide tailor made interventions, one-to-one or in a group setting, to those young people who are identified through the screening process as requiring a substance misuse service.
  • To use a harm reduction model when delivering interventions to young people.
  • To be involved in the development of programmes and practice.
  • To provide related training, advice and guidance to Youth Offending Service staff, including volunteers.
  • To refer andliaise with other services as appropriate and necessary.
  • To assist substance misusing young people to engage with existing support networks.
  • To become involved in outreach initiatives to support those at risk of anti- social or offending behaviour
  • To provide identified groups e.g. parents, with sessions to raise awareness of substance misuse issues
  • To advocate on behalf of young people and their families.
  • To empower young people to enable them to help themselves through informed choice and decision-making.
  • To maintain appropriate records and collate information required by TEDS and the YOS in order to measure outcomes and report on Youth Justice Board targets.
  • To complete reports to allow for effective monitoring and evaluation.
  • To take part in the office duty rota, which includes undertaking appropriate adult duty.
  • To take up provision for support, supervision and training.
  • To work effectively in a formal setting
