The Great Depression of the 1930s gave birth to a branch of economics that in 1933 Ragnar Frisch christened macroeconomics. Over the decades that followed up to the present, the interactions of economic events, economic policy, and macroeconomic theory have created a fascinating story integral to the life and politics ofnational economies aroundthe world. This book recounts that story. It brings together three strands of activities and trends: the economic events of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries that defined the economic problems facing the nation, policymakers, and economists; the responses of economists who brought the accumulated knowledge of the profession to bear on these problems; and the successes and failures of these policies as they reshaped the economic landscape and defined new sets of problems to be analyzed by macroeconomic theory.

Integral transforms, such as the Laplace and Fourier transforms, have been major tools in mathematical physics for at least two centuries. In the last 25 years, the development of gauge theory has been closely related to new generalizations of integral transforms of a more geometric character. Fourier–Mukai and NahmTransforms in Geometry and Mathematical Physics examines the differential-geometric constructions (Nahm) as well as the algebro-geometric approach (Fourier–Mukai functors). Also included is a considerable amount of material scattered in the literature and not systematically organized in any existing textbook or monograph.

Optimal Quadratic Programming Algorithms
With Applications to Variational Inequalities
AUTHOR: / Zdenek Dostál, Technical University of Ostrava, Czech RepublicISBN-13: / 978-0-387-84805-1
PAGES/ILLUS: / approx. 300 p., 55 illus., Hardcover
PRICE: / $89.95

Solving optimization problems in complex systems often requires the implementation of advanced mathematical techniques. Quadratic programming (QP) is one technique that allows forthe optimization of a quadratic function in several variables in the presence of linear constraints. QP problems arise in fields as diverse as electrical engineering, agricultural planning, and optics. Given its broad applicability, a comprehensive understanding of quadratic programming is a valuable resource in nearly every scientific field.
Optimal Quadratic Programming Algorithms presents recently developed algorithms for solving large QP problems. The presentation focuses on algorithms which are, in a sense optimal, i.e., they can solve important classes of problems ata cost proportional to the number of unknowns. For each algorithm presented, the book details its classical predecessor, describes its drawbacks, introduces modifications that improve its performance, and demonstrates these improvements through numerical experiments.
This self-contained monograph can serve as an introductory text on quadratic programming for graduate students and researchers. Additionally, since the solution of many nonlinear problems can be reduced to the solution of a sequence of QP problems, it can also be used as a convenient introduction to nonlinear programming. The reader is required to have a basic knowledge of calculus in several variables and linear algebra.
SELLING POINTS:
- Thefirst monograph to present the solutionto quadratic programming problems, a topic usuallyaddressed only in journal publications
- Offers theoretical and practical results in the field of bound-constrained and equality-constrained optimization
- Provides algorithms with the rate of convergence independent of constraints
- Develops theoretically supported scalable algorithms for variational inequalities
- Comprehensive presentation of working set methods and inexact augmented Lagrangians
MARKET: / Mathematicians and engineers interested in solving very large quadratic programming problems.
