  1. Given below are the General Welding Requirements for Stainless Steel & Alloy Steel materials:

a)For SS-304 / 304 L / 316 / 316 L / 321 / 347:

Interpass: 125 deg cent

Shielding Gas: Argon

Root Run shall be TIG only.

Shielding and Back Purging shall be by Argon for root run, subsequent passes by SMAW.

b)For 5 Cr ½ Mo and 9 Cr ½ Mo:

Preheat: 200 deg cent

Interpass: 250 deg cent

Shielding Gas : Argon

Root Run shall be TIG only.

Shielding and Back Purging shall be by Argon for root run, subsequent passes by SMAW.

Radiography has to be done both before and after stress relieving.

All requirements for heat treatment shall be as per ASME B 31.3. Also, Vendor to take HPCL Inspection advise for details of Stress Relieving cycle, requirement, procedure etc.

  1. For CS materials:
  2. For welding of thickness <12mm, For root welding use AWS E6010 or TIG welding using ER70S2 filler wire and for subsequent passes, AWS E6013 Electrodes shall be used.
  3. For welding of thickness >=12mm, For root welding use AWS E6010 or TIG welding using ER70S2 filler wire and for subsequent passes, AWS E7018 Electrodes shall be used.
  4. For fillet welds & Socket welds, AWS E6013 electrodes shall be used.
  1. Monel weld deposition procedure
  2. Take a 5 mm. deep cut on the surface (By grinding as per the job requirement).
  3. Deposition of one layer of pure Ni on the cut surface of approx. 2 mm thick as a buffer barrier layer to avoid Fe dilution & pick up. (Use AWS E Ni 1 electrode or ER Ni 1 filler wire)
  4. Deposition of remaining depth of cut (after Ni weld deposition) with monel electrode in multiple passes using E NiCu-7 electrode or ER NiCu-7 filler.
  5. Carrying out Potassium Ferricynide test of the weld deposition just before the final pass to check for any Fe contamination.
  6. DP & potassium ferricynide test of the final finish surface.
  7. Fe pickup at any stage detected in Potassium Ferri-cyanide test will be repaired by grinding the surface up to the base and then repairing it again by above mentioned procedure.
