Systems & Database Administration Role

Job Title: IT Systems and Database Administrator

Reporting to: Senior Systems Team Leader

Location: United Christian Broadcasters Limited, Stoke-on-Trent

Hours: Full Time, Monday to Friday, hours to be arranged between

8-00am to 6-00pm

Some flexibility will be required, including on-call

General Duties

q  Provide a professional point of contact to all service users; both internally and externally, ensuring that work undertaken accurately reflects UCB’s Christian values and ethos

q  To support senior management to ensure that industry database and system standards are applied in relation to process, procedure and security.

q  To help create systems operating procedures in support of departmental policy.

q  To train and support colleagues in systems and database management tasks.

q  To advise staff with regard to the technical capabilities of IT and other technical systems or equipment to assist them to achieve particular results

q  To train staff members on the safe use of IT hardware as necessary to help improve their job performance.

q  To provide 1st, 2nd and 3rd line technical support

Administration

q  To help record location of key system objects

q  To help maintain a corporate asset register for all IT equipment of a certain value.

q  To help maintain patch, fix and upgrade logs including configuration management registers to ensure O/S, database, and application versions are up-to-date.

Monitoring

q  To use server utility tools to monitor elements of the system, such as memory, central processing unit (CPU) and program errors generated from a system or software problems

q  To monitor business and infrastructure systems and be able to configure, test and apply server monitoring systems to provide proactive monitoring of systems.

q  To monitor database performance and optimise as and when necessary.

Provisioning

q  To install and configure appropriate operating system and application software on desktop clients, mobile devices and host servers as appropriate.

q  To install and configure Microsoft windows operating systems

q  To install and configure Microsoft database management systems

q  To provide database administration services to existing and new business and infrastructure systems

Maintenance & Support

q  To apply system and application patches, fixes or upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure or add new services as necessary.

q  To upgrade and configure system software that supports applications per project or operational need.

q  To maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.

q  To provide periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.

q  To execute ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions etc., as required.

q  To provide support for UCB’s application portfolio including critical business systems such as TV, Radio and CRM systems.

q  To perform operating system, application database backup and recovery functions.

q  To provide assistance and support to other departments that operate and utilise database applications, clients, and servers.

Development

q  To be able to develop database and operating system scripts to perform more bespoke administration and application tasks.

q  To progress the migration of applications database and web services, to a virtualised environment as part of UCB’s plan for improved service and efficiency.

q  To progress the migration of disparate data stores to centralised storage

q  To automate the archiving of data to centralised data stores as and when necessary

q  To help create systems operating procedures in support of departmental policy.

Security

q  To ensure that UCB data held within and outside of UCB’s IT infrastructure including mobile devices is stored safely and securely with the provision of available backup functions.

q  To help enforce security procedures in support of UCB’s policies and industry standards

q  To help support and improve the security of UCB’s network through the use of manage networks, firewalls, de-militarised zones and proxy services.

q  To help enforce security procedures in support of UCB’s policies and industry standards

Knowledge & Skills

q  To possess a basic knowledge of systems design

q  To possess advanced knowledge of windows server operating systems.

q  To monitor database performance and optimise as and when necessary.

q  Evaluate an organization's virtualization requirements and plan for server virtualization.

q  Install and configure the Hyper-V server role; create virtual machines, create and manage virtual hard disks and work with snapshots.

q  Create and configure virtual machine networks in a Hyper-V environment; implement virtual machine movement and Hyper-V Replica

q  To support senior management to ensure that industry database and system standards are applied in relation to process, procedures and security.

q  To be able to train and support colleagues in systems and database management tasks.

q  To be able to work well under minimal supervision and have strong written and oral presentation skills.

q  To possess analytical and excellent problem-solving skills

q  To be able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize different projects simultaneously.
