5. Experimental accomplishment

In a 250 mL round bottom flas, 9.15 g of KMnO4 were dissolved in 75 mL of water and, while stirring, 2.95 g (0.03 mol) of cyclohexanone were added. The resulting mixture was haeated to 30 °C and some drops of 10 % (w/w) NaOH solution were added. Temperature was then raised to 50 °C for 20 min and then to 100 °C for 1 min. The mixture was then cooled down to room temperature and acidified to pH 0 with concentrated HCl. Then it was put in the fridge overnight. The resulting crystals were then filtered, washed with cold water and characterized. An amount of 2.79 g (0.019 mol) of product was received.

For the calculation of the yield the molar amount of received product was divided by the molar amount of reactants used, and then multiplied by 100. This calculation yields a percentage of 63.3%:
