Syllabus for World Geography
5th-6th grades
Week 1- September 6
Class- Learn about geography, time zones, hemispheres, globes, maps, atlases. Go over
geography terms.
Homework- Work on learning geography terms; choose a geography project topic. Project
due last day of class, November 22.
Week 2- September 13
Class- Map Skills- maps vs. gps; atlas; compass; inspect Florida map
Homework- Plan and plot a trip from Miami to someplace in FL, using the map from class;
review geography terms.
Week 3- September 20
Class- World, Continents, Oceans- using maps, label continents, oceans, seas, bays, gulfs,
Pacific Rim; use atlas to look up information.
Homework- Review handouts and maps; finish labeling; review geography terms.
Week 4- September 27
Class- United States Geography- using maps, label regions, Great Lakes, mountain ranges,
rivers, Everglades; learn about 14 US territories and label.
Homework- Finish labeling; review geography terms; work on project.
Week 5- October 4
Class- North America- label countries and specifics within those countries; Canada;
Mexico.
Homework- Finish labeling; review terms; work on project.
Week 6- October 11
Class- South America- label Islands, lakes, rivers, falls, mountains, countries; Brazil
handout.
Homework- Label Brazil map (Brasilla, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Amazon River, Iguacu
Falls, MarajoIsland, Sao FranciscoRiver); review geography terms; work on
project.
Week 7- October 18
Class- Europe- label major cities and geographical features; learn about British Isles and
major areas in Europe.
Homework- Label countries in Europe; review geography terms; work on project.
Week 8- October 25
Class- Africa- learn about Africa; label major geographical features.
Homework- Label countries in Africa; review geography terms; work on project.
Week 9- November 1
Class- Asia- label regions of Asia; label major geographical features of Asia; learn about
Asia.
Homework- Label countries in Asia; review geography terms; work on project.
Week 10- November 8
Class- Australia/Oceania- label states and 2 territories in Australia; label major
geographical features; learn about Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania.
Homework- Label as many islands as you can; review geography terms; work on project.
Week 11- November 15
Class- Antarctica- learn about Antarctica and label major geographical features; play
geography games; take terms TEST.
Homework- Finish up project.
Week 12- November 22
