Transition Elective I & II

Course Objective

The objective for this class is to improve student performance in the classroom by enhancing study skills. This course will also improve the quality of life by providing and refining transitional skills that the student can use post high school.During this class students will review and practice Alabama High School Graduation Exam Objectives and learn test taking strategies. Basic math and reading skills will be reviewed in this class. Transition Services II is a required class for students pursuing the Alabama Occupational Diploma.

Class Objectives:

1. Implementation of study, organizational, note taking, and social skills.

2. Provide individual and group instruction for academic needs.

3. Monitor other class assignments and track grades.

4. Provide time to complete other class assignments.

5. Develop a post high school transition plan.

6. Strengthen work related skills.

7. Strengthen reading and writing skills through various assignments.

Materials

  • Paper, Pen or Pencil, and Paper Folder (Folder remains in class until the end of the year)
  • Materials are due the next class meeting.

Grading

  • Major tests count for 50% of your final grade
  • Projects/ Individual or Group Presentation 25% of final grade
  • Classwork, Homework, Notebook checks, and Journal Writing 25% of final grade

********** I do not give you a grade, YOU earn it!!!! If you do your work, study for your tests, participate in class, and have a great attitude you will pass this class no problem. Remember you are now responsible for you!

Makeup Work Policy

  • Makeup work and test will only be given if the absence is excused.
  • Makeup tests will be given on Fridays during class time.

Attendance & Tardy Policy

  • Like in the workforce your attendance is required! If you are not at work you do not get paid, if you do not come to school you cannot earn your grade!
  • If you are not in your seat when the tardy bell rings, YOU ARE TARDY!
  • When you receive 3 tardies you will be required to write 10 Honor Codes.
  • If you refuse to write or forget to turn Honor Codes in on time, the 10 will be doubled to 20 due the next class meeting.
  • After the writing assignment has been doubled and you have still refused to comply with the rule, you will be sent directly to the office!

Snacks

  • At my discretion when we have snacks in this class!
  • If trash from snacks in the room becomes a problem- NO SNACKS!
  • Mrs. Bowling will determine when and who will get snacks.

Passes

  • Passes out of class will only be given for immediate and important reasons
  • You will be given 3 bathroom passes per 6 weeks- Use them wisely!

  1. Please respect others by not bothering them.

Rewards:

Each 9 weeks: Students who has had no discipline problems will receive a "Raise a Grade" certificate. This certificate will allow you to raise your lowest test score one letter grade. Example if on unit 1 you scored a 60, you can raise that 60 to a 70 with this certificate.

Classroom procedures may be amended or added at any time based on the need of the class environment.

What will a typical week look like in this class? I teach in units of study- meaning that I covered one topic in depth at a time. Each class is 52 minutes long. This is the breakdown of how out class will run:

  • 5 minutes at the beginning of class- complete bellringer, take care of snack order, other
  • 25 minutes of transition skills standards/skill review
  • 20 minutes of desk work- this time will be when you can work on material from other classes (If you do not bring something to work on then you will be assigned a very unappealing activity)
  • 2 minutes- wrap up and review

We will have guest speakers and visit various employment locations (Transition Services II only). Misbehavior during these activities will result in immediate office referral. Please remember components of this class are requirements for graduation-receiving an incomplete may harm your completion of graduation requirements and the ability to graduate.
