LEARNING ABOUT OUR WORLD - EVENING TALK, SLIDESHOW & DISCUSSION

Occupied Lives: Promoting human rights and development in the Gaza Strip

Talk & Slideshow - photos of Gaza’s people and places - Gisela Schmidt-Martin

It’s easy to switch off from news of Israel & Palestine - the situation there can seem so intractable. Our challenge is to stay tuned in to what is happening in this part of our world. There’s an opportunity to hear the first-hand experience of a young Cork woman who lived in Gaza for an extended period working in a human rights capacity. She writes: “Despite the withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers from inside the Gaza Strip in 2005, Israel continues to exercise effective control over its land borders with the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt), as well as Palestinian waters and airspace. Imports into the Gaza Strip are severely limited and exports are practically non-existent. The movement of people is also subject to severe restrictions.

The result is that more than 80 per cent of residents of the Gaza Strip are dependent on humanitarian aid, while the population endures repeated energy and water crises. Additionally, the recent regime change in Egypt has led to a rollback in the previous easing of restrictions on the border with Egypt, and the destruction of smuggling tunnels has removed a vital lifeline for many Palestinians. The resulting energy crisis has led to an increase in the daily power cuts from the usual 8-12 hours per day to up to 18 hours per day.
In 2012, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, described the situation as "collective punishment of all those living in Gaza and [...] a denial of basic human rights in contravention of international law”. Also in 2012, the UN Country Team for the oPt issued a report, 'Gaza in 2020: A liveable place?', which warns that it will no longer be viable to live in the Gaza Strip by 2020 unless humanitarian and development concerns are addressed as a matter of urgency. The situation for civilian residents of the Gaza Strip is only getting worse.”
Gisela Schmidt-Martin is a young Cork woman who has a Masters degree in International Human Rights Law from the Irish Centre for Human Rights at NUI Galway. She has worked at the Victims Unit of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Phnom Penh, in the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the UN in NYC and with Front Line Defenders and UNHCR in Dublin. Most recently, Gisela worked with the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights in the Gaza Strip, and remained in Gaza during the 8-day Israeli offensive, codenamed 'Operation Pillar of Defence', which took place from 14 - 21 November 2012. 171 Palestinians were killed during the offensive, 102 of whom were civilians. At least 648 Palestinians sustained moderate to serious injuries, of whom 625 were civilians.

Introduction to Mindfulness- A weekend workshop in Killarney

With Clodagh McCarthy

Though many of us want to slow down and experience greater calm and ease, we often find that doing this is not so easy. Mindfulness is a simple practice that connects us to our natural sense of presence. Learning and practicing mindfulness helps us come to our senses in a very real way and live more fully in the present moment.

During this weekend we will explore the various mindfulness practices with the aim of helping us to live more fully in the present moment, to slow down and to nurture our connection both to ourselves and others.

Clodagh McCarthy is a Mindfulness trainer working in Dublin and Cork. She has led three very enjoyable workshops in Killarney for SHEP.

Family Constellations - a weekend workshop with Brendan O’Brien M.I.A.C.P.

Pain and hurt are often carried in families from one generation to the next. Sometimes – unknown to ourselves – we carry difficulties that do not belong to us. Based on the work of Bert Hellinger and others, this work offers insights into the hidden dynamics of our Family System. Love flows when everyone has their rightful place, when things are put in order and when there is a balance of giving and taking. Using “constellations” where representatives take on the roles of family members, participants can be helped find new and better solutions for themselves and for their families.

Brendan O’Brienis an accredited integrative psychotherapist. He is Vice President of the International Systemic Constellations Association (ISCA) and has been involved in training therapists on a course leading to degree level qualification for over ten years.
