Course Introduction and Goals:

This course addresses business principles and practices as they relate to the field of interior design. This includes the application of codes as they relate to the development of a space plan and the selection and specification of interior finishes and furniture.

Goal:

To experience the design process from the inception to the completion of a project including the design and the documentation of that design. To develop a familiarity with the codes and the code review process as it relates to the specific project selected for this course. To become familiar with the codes, standards, and Federal Regulations as they apply to interior design.

Objectives:

To become familiar with the complete design process including:

  • Conducting a client interview
  • Writing a proposal
  • Estimating time and expenses
  • Writing the program based on client needs
  • Documenting project history and client approvals
  • Developing presentation techniques and materials
  • Completing Design Phases

Schematic Design

Design Development

Construction Documentation

Bidding and Negotiation

Construction Administration

  • Completing a code analysis of developed space plan (with emphasis on BOCA 1999 and Americans with Disabilities Act.)
  • Budgeting and Scheduling
  • Project documentation
  • Documenting the design through schedules and specifications
  • Working with consultants and contractors
  • Maintaining strong relationships throughout design process
  • Protecting against liabilities
