Job Safety Analysis:
Step / Description / Hazard / Controls1 / Drape the client for shampooing. Shampoo, rinse, and towel dry the client's hair. Drape the client for thermal styling, using a neck strip and styling cape. Apply pressing oil or cream (some stylists prefer to apply oil or cream after the hair has been completely dried). / Client becoming too hot from inappropriate draping. Too much pressing oil or cream. / Use the appropriate styling cape. Use a small amount of pressing oil or cream at a time.
2 / Dry hair thoroughly. Comb and divide the hair into four main sections and pin them up. Test the temperature of the heated iron on a white cloth or white paper. / Appliance could scald the hair if temperature is too hot. / Test the temperature of the heated iron on a white cloth or white paper.
3 / Unpin one section of the hair at a time (starting at either front or back). Beginning at the bottom, subdivide the section in 1/2 inch-1 horizontal partings (1.25-2.5 cm). / Uneven partings will result in uneven straightening and or pressing. / Take thinner consistent partings.
4 / Place the hair between the flat iron. Press the iron together and slide slowly over the subsection of hair, working from the scalp to the ends. / Burning the client or yourself. / Use a comb or paddle brush between the scalp and iron while sliding the iron through the hair.
