Required Personal Protective Equipment: CSA approved safety glasses or goggles, CSA approved steel-toed footwear, 100% cotton coveralls preferred, and hearing protection required in confined space/area and/or per RETSD policy.

GENERAL NOTES: No lighters, matches or cell phones are allowed in the shop area. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long necklaces, bracelets and rings should be removed. Long hair should be tied back. Strings and hoods hanging from pullovers/sweaters should be removed or tucked inside of coveralls.

Job Safety Analysis:

Step / Description / Hazard / Controls
1 / Ensure clean work area, check for any flammable or combustible materials. / Fire, Explosion. / Good Housekeeping, keep area clean, clear away debris. Ensure that flammable or combustible materials are moved away before starting work. Make sure surface is clean and dry.
2 / 1. Check the electrical reciprocating saw for cuts or frays on the electrical cord. If cuts are found give it to the teacher/instructor. 2. Check the pneumatic saw airline hose and couplings for any damage, if damage is found give to the teacher/supervisor. / May cause shock or compressed air exposure. / 1.Do not use reciprocator saw if the electrical cord is damaged.
Give damaged reciprocating saw to the teacher/instructor do not use damaged tools
2. Do not use the pneumatic saw if the airline hose or coupling is damaged. If so, give damaged airline hose and or coupling to the teacher/supervisor.
3 / 1. Check that the correct blade is installed for the material that is to be cut. Ensure that the blade is installed correctly. / Laceration or projectile blade. / 1. Always unplug reciprocating saw before changing the blade.
If unsure of the correct blade to use ask instructor. If unsure that blade is installed correctly as instructor.
4. / 1. Do not place excessive pressure on the saw while cutting and become over balanced.
2. Do not twist or bend blade excessively as this could cause blade to break. / Operator out of control
Laceration or projectile blade / 1. Let the blade cut for you without excess pressure. Be aware of posture while cutting. Move material to be cut so that operator of saw is not over balanced.
2. Pay attention while cutting material.
5. / Do not hold work against your body. Avoid holding wood with your hand. Use a vice to support your work piece. / Laceration / Always cut away from yourself.
6. / Place the rocker shoe against the work when cutting with the reciprocator saw. / Laceration / Always use the rocker against the work when cutting with the reciprocator saw.
