Room 211

January 31, 2016

Swimming: We are swimming this week, Tuesday through Friday. Please send in the permission slip. It would be helpful for you to remind your child that best behavior in the lobby and locker room of the YMCA is important. Remember to send suit and towel in a sturdy bag.

Reading Calendars: Send in the January calendar. It is important to list some of the books your child read during the month. Make sure your child is reading EVERY night at least 30 to 40 minutes. I am encouraging children to read a balance of graphic novels and chapter book.

Goal Setting Conferences: While it makes for long days for me I so look forward to spending time with families setting goals for the rest of the year. I will attach the schedule for those who still need to select a time.

Martin Luther King:We continue to learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. This week we tackled understanding the Fifteenth Amendment and was it working in the United States at that time. In addition we discussed who were the Freedom Riders and why bringing freedom to Birmingham so important. We ended the week with King’s I Have a Dream speech. Talk with your child about these topics.

Science:We are all a buzz in the room about electricity. We are learning about energy and how to make light bulbs light and make motors whirr!! Fun times in 211.

Friday Physics: Still needing liter bottles. (Think tonic sized bottles!) Please send in rinsed out containers for us. We need 60!

Valentines Day: The February calendar is proving challenging for celebrating Valentine’s Day. We will have a circle discussion and come to consensus as to celebrate before the day, Thursday, February 11 (no school on Friday) or wait until Monday, February 15.

It is a super fun day for kids to exchange cards. I will be looking for volunteers to donate juice boxes, sugar cookies or SMALL cupcakes and small plates and napkins.

Mosiac Night: The third and fourth grade classrooms via their specialists classes are working on songs, dance and art to present to families on Thursday, March 10 from 5 to 7 pm. Mark your calendars.

Hallway incident: One day last week our hallway was the scene of a student who was having a difficult time with their emotions. Administrators and our special education staff was dealing with the situation. While Room 211 always has our door open and use the hallway for our work I made the decision to close our door and keep children in the classroom. I brought the computer lab into the classroom and also had a couple of kids bring our boots in. It was near the end of the day and for the privacy of the student I felt it best to keep things in the room. At no time were any of the children in any danger of being harmed. We will process what happened in our morning circle on Monday.
